Obama: U.S. has good leads on who carried out Benghazi attacks

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States has some "very good leads" about who carried out the attacks in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans including the U.S. ambassador in September, President Barack Obama said in an interview broadcast on Sunday.

Obama told NBC's "Meet the Press" that the United States would carry out all of the recommendations put forward in an independent review of the September 11 attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi in which Ambassador Christopher Stevens was killed.

"We're not going to pretend that this was not a problem. This was a huge problem. And we're going to implement every single recommendation that's been put forward," Obama said in the interview, referring to security issues identified in the review.

"With respect to who carried it out, that's an ongoing investigation. The FBI has sent individuals to Libya repeatedly. We have some very good leads, but this is not something that I'm going to be at liberty to talk about right now," he said.

The interview was conducted on Saturday.

Manchester United forward Robin van Persie sees huge activity boost to Official PFA Facebook page after impressive performance against Newcastle, say Digital Sports Group

(PRWEB UK) 29 December 2012

Digital Sports Group head of operations Matthew Tait has said the recent on field heroics of Manchester United's ?24 million acquisition have made a huge impact to the striker's Official PFA Facebook page, with the total amount of 'People talking about' increasing by over 30% week on week. The Facebook page has become a thriving hub for the Manchester United striker since its launch and is becoming more and more popular with each week that passes, with a rapidly growing community of fans keen to hear all the latest news on their favourite player. The official PFA Facebook page, along with Robin van Persie player profile on football.co.uk, provide the only online location of the official PFA biography, lifetime stats, news and high resolution gallery.

After listening to 'the little boy inside' him and moving to Manchester United, Robin Van Persie has been prolific in-front of goal, scoring 11 goals in 16 Premier League games for the Manchester giants, and getting the Red Devils out of some sticky situations in the process.

The Manchester United front man has made a string of impressive performances in recent weeks for the Red Devils and helped get United out of another sticky situation against Newcastle on Boxing Day. Sir Alex Ferguson's men had to come from behind three times to earn victory against The Magpies. Robin van Persie was once again indispensable for United, providing an assist and scoring a vital equaliser to make it 3-3 for the Red Devils before team mate Javier Hernandez netted the winner on 90 minutes.

Head of Operations at DSG, Matthew Tait had this to say, ?Robin van Persie really has no shortage of fans after his performances for Manchester United this season and we can see that by the success of his PFA Facebook page. All of us here at Digital Sports Group are proud we've had the opportunity to work with The PFA to give the fans a fantastic and unique fan resource for Robin van Persie.?

DSG became the official digital partner of the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) earlier this year and have since launched a number of Player profile fan pages on social media site Facebook as well as providing official player pages on their football news site football.co.uk.

No 'fiscal cliff' deal, but Democrats, GOP closer to compromise (Los Angeles Times)

Vail Daily letter: Don't blame GOP for fiscal cliff

I hope everyone, especially the liberals who voted for Obama, have been paying attention to the looming ?fiscal cliff.?

As it stands now, everyone will be getting hit with higher taxes Jan. 1. Obama and the Democrats did a great job waging class warfare during the election and tricking the naive voters that ?the rich? need to pay more taxes. The reality is that everyone is going to be considered rich after Jan. 1.

The current tax rates are 10, 15, 28, 33 and 35 percent. The more you make, the higher your rate (despite what the liberals want you to believe.) After Jan. 1, the new rates will be: 15, 25, 28, 36 and 39.6 percent. Yep, you read that right, everyone is getting a tax increase!

Sadly, the facts are that Republicans are like the nerd who sits in the back of the class that everyone just loved to make fun of. The GOP warned America what the Democrats had in store for them and were demonized, ridiculed and spit on for even bringing facts to the discussion.

Make sure you look at your paycheck after the new year, and be sure to send Obama and the liberals a thank-you note for your reduced take-home pay.

Then brace yourself, married couples are going to get hit even harder, and the liberals haven't even begun to stick their hands in your pockets to pay for Obamacare yet.

NHL, union spend day on conference calls

NEW YORK (AP) ? Lots of questions, but still no answers in the NHL labor fight.

The league and the players' association spent much of Saturday talking to each other via conference call. The conversations were strictly for the purpose of sharing information regarding the new contract offer the NHL made to the union late Thursday. The initial thought was that the sides would get together Sunday in New York to hold official negotiations for the first time in weeks, but those hadn't been scheduled as of late Saturday afternoon.

"Some more informational sessions in the morning," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told The Associated Press regarding Sunday. "Nothing planned beyond that."

The union pored over the latest NHL proposal aimed at ending the lockout that reached its 105th day Saturday and saving the delayed hockey season. The league would like to reach a deal no later than Jan. 11, which would allow training camps to start the following day, and a 48-game season to begin Jan. 19.

Saturday's conference calls were scheduled Friday night so the union could ask league officials questions about the nearly 300-page proposal. Whether enough progress will be made to lead to face-to-face talks remains to be seen.

The sides haven't gotten together since Dec. 13 with federal mediators. Bargaining sessions with only the NHL and union involved haven't been held since Dec. 6, when talks abruptly ended after the players' association made a counterproposal to the league's previous offer. The league said that offer was contingent on the union accepting three elements unconditionally and without further bargaining.

The NHL then pulled all existing offers off the table. Two days of sessions with mediators the following week ended without any progress made.

The players' association's executive board and negotiating committee went over the new proposal during an internal conference call Friday.

A person familiar with key points of the offer told The Associated Press that the league proposed raising the limit of individual free-agent contracts to six years from five ? seven years if a team re-signs its own player; raising the salary variance from one year to another to 10 percent, up from 5 percent; and one compliance buyout for the 2013-14 season that wouldn't count toward a team's salary cap but would be included in the overall players' share of income.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because details of the new offer weren't being discussed publicly.

The NHL maintained the deferred payment amount of $300 million it offered in its previous proposal, an increase from an earlier offer of $211 million. The initial $300 million offer was pulled off the table after negotiations broke off earlier this month.

The latest proposal is for 10 years, running through the 2021-22 season, with both sides having the right to opt out after eight years.

The lockout has reached a critical stage, threatening to shut down a season for the second time in eight years. All games through Jan. 14, plus the Winter Classic and the All-Star game already have been called off. The next round of cuts could claim the entire schedule.

The NHL is the only North American professional sports league to cancel a season because of a labor dispute, losing the 2004-05 campaign to a lockout. A 48-game season was played in 1995 after a lockout stretched into January.

It is still possible this dispute could eventually be settled in the courts if the sides can't reach a deal on their own.

The NHL filed a class-action suit this month in U.S. District Court in New York in an effort to show its lockout is legal. In a separate move, the league filed an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board, contending bad-faith bargaining by the union.

Those moves were made because the players' association took steps toward potentially filing a "disclaimer of interest," which would dissolve the union and make it a trade association. That would allow players to file antitrust lawsuits against the NHL.

Union members voted overwhelmingly to give their board the power to file the disclaimer by Jan. 2. If that deadline passes, another authorization vote could be held to approve a later filing.

Negotiations between the NHL and the union have been at a standstill since talks ended Dec. 6. One week later, the sides convened again with federal mediators in New Jersey, but still couldn't make progress.

The sides have been unable to reach agreement on the length of the new deal, the length of individual player contracts, and the variance in salary from year to year. The NHL is looking for an even split of revenues with players.

Worst team in NBA a tonic for Bulls

Marco Belinelli said he has repeated himself 100 times about how his love of basketball obviously means he would love to play as much as possible.

He got what he wanted Saturday night.

Despite returning to the bench as Richard Hamilton returned from injury to the starting lineup, Belinelli's playing time wasn't diminished much as he scored a game-high 17 points in 33 minutes in the Bulls' 87-77 victory over the Wizards before a crowd of 22,447 at the United Center.

"I think what's more important is confidence in myself," he said. "The first couple of weeks of the season I didn't have much. Now it's different."

The Bulls' belief in Belinelli is better than that. On a night when they shot only 39.1 percent as a team, his 7 of 16 marksmanship was essential.

"I thought Marco was terrific," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. "He has been playing well for a long time. He hit big shots and made big plays."

The Bulls needed a lift after losing back-to-back games. But they still struggled against the Wizards, the NBA's worst team with a 4-24 overall record, 1-13 record on the road.

The Wizards, playing without injured leading scorer Jordan Crawford, shot only 36.5 percent but kept the Bulls within reach most of the game. They led by eight points in the first quarter and trailed only 79-76 with 5 minutes, 19 seconds remaining.

After that, Belinelli hit a 3-pointer and the Bulls locked in defensively, holding the Wizards without a field goal.

"Right now, we're not playing our best basketball, but we just found a way," Joakim Noah said. "It was a good win for us."

Hamilton played after missing 12 games with a torn plantar fascia in his left foot, finishing with nine points in almost 15 minutes.

"I thought he had a pretty good rhythm going," Thibodeau said. "That was a big plus."

Deng also returned from a right ankle injury that he sustained in the Christmas loss to the Rockets. He scored 11 points on 4 of 13 shooting.

The Bulls consider the victory a step forward after losing back-to-back games to the Rockets and Hawks. "The win was huge," Deng said.

Deng sat much of the fourth quarter, but Thibodeau said that was because he liked the lineup he at the time and not because of Deng's injury.

"It's good," Deng said of his ankle. "I'm glad I'm back on the court."

Belinelli's role going forward is undetermined, Thibodeau said. But it's clear he values Hamilton, a 14-year veteran, returning to the court.

"I am not sure yet," Thibodeau said of Belinelli's role. "We are going to go back and forth. 'Rip' was good today, taking everything into consideration. We need his minutes, we need his shots, and we need his points."

English Learning Course: Pastimes

Leisure is time spent in non-compulsory activities. Because leisure time is free from compulsory activities such as work, study, household duties, eating and sleeping, it is often referred to as 'free time'. The ideas of leisure and leisure time are thought to have emerged in the late 19th century with the rise of mechanized industry, when the increase in productivity of labour resulted in the fact that workers had some time to spend on themselves.

They started doing sports and visiting theatres. Since then, the idea of leisure time and relaxation has been popular with all the age groups and social classes. Old and young, rich and poor have been using their free time for rest and entertainment. The ways people spend their leisure time normally differ, according to the age group: middle-aged and old people normally prefer more passive kind of rest like watching TV or going to the theatre, or sometimes gardening, younger people enjoy more active pastimes like doing extreme sports, visiting night clubs and discos or travelling. However, the idea of active leisure like doing sports or travelling is gaining popularity with the older people, too.

So, the basic leisure time activities of the young are travelling, doing sports including extreme sports, visiting discos and night clubs or more passive ways of recreation like listening to music or watching TV and videos, and surfing the Internet. Teenagers normally prefer to do extreme sports, that is sports featuring speed, height and danger as they lead to the so-called 'adrenaline rush9 in participants. They wish to push themselves to the limits of their physical ability and fear, and push the boundaries of a particular sport, such as bungee jumping, climbing, white-water rafting, surfing, windsurfing and many others. Their tastes in music are normally different kinds of popular music associated with youth subcultures, such as hard rock, hip-hop or rap, punk rock, psychedelic rock and the like. In watching TV and videos or going to the cinema, they prefer film genres which are full of action, movement, colour, cinema effects and have a good soundtrack. They normally like action films, comedies, musicals, thrillers and cartoons.

Sometimes the ways young people spend their free time varies according to the country, as they sometimes depend on national traditions. For example, in the USA young people normally like different types of popular culture which originated in their country like blues, different kinds of rock, country music and hip hop in music and pop art in fine arts. The sports they are doing are more often than not those which originated in America like baseball, auto-racing, basketball, and board-based recreational sports ? surfboarding, skateboarding and snowboarding. American youngsters are fond of eating out and eat a lot of junk food like hambuigers and cheeseburgers and drink Coca-cola or Pepsi. British youngsters are really fond of watching football matches and sorts of races such as horse-racing, boat-racing and even dog-racing, as well as playing football, rugby and golf and taking part in races. They are really fond of pets and often spend some time in the evening taking their dog for a walk. In going out for the evening, they still prefer pubs to restaurants, bars and cafes. In music, their tastes are nearly the same as those of their American peers. In Germany young people prefer drinking beer when meeting their friends and spending much time doing various sports. In Spain many youngsters, as well as older people, are fond of watching bullfighting. In France, they like listening to French chanson.

Now, I would like to share my favourite hobbies with you. I am a real fan of ballroom dancing, so when I have time, I visit a dance studio or just watch online dancing classes and practise at home. Moreover, I am a real bookworm. I like reading fiction and detective stories, as they really consume me and develop my imagination. I am so into books when reading them, I feel really involved in the story. My favourite books are about Harry Potter. I am not really a fan of novels, but I still read them if they are interesting. The writer I would like to distinguish is Jane Austen.

Approval for gene-modified salmon spawns controversy

Fast-growing salmon have cleared another hurdle in an upstream battle to be the first genetically modified animal approved for human consumption. After a long and possibly politically motivated delay, federal regulators have released preliminary documents declaring the fish safe to eat and environmentally harmless.

Since 1995, a company called AquaBounty, based in Maynard, Massachusetts, has been seeking approval from the US government to sell its AquAdvantage fish. These Pacific salmon have been modified with a growth hormone gene from Chinook salmon, which causes them to grow twice as fast as normal fish.

Rather than releasing the fish into the wild, the company plans to engineer its eggs in highly secure tanks in Canada, then ship them to Panama to mature. As a precaution, the fish are all female and contain three copies of each chromosome rather than two, rendering them sterile.

Controversy has engulfed the fish since their creation, but the concern is more about their potential ecological impacts than dangers to human health. Organisations such as the Marine Fish Conservation Network, which promotes sustainable fishing practices, worry that the transgenic salmon could outcompete wild salmon if they escape. "The risk of escapes and damage to wild ocean fisheries is simply too great to be left to chance," director Matt Tinning said in a statement.

The organisation says it has not yet had time to review the newly released assessment, published on 27 December by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In two preliminary documents, it declares that AquaBounty's safety measures are sufficient, that the fish would have no significant environmental impact and that they are safe for human consumption.

Delayed release

The timing of the release has sparked suspicion of political interference, as it came hours after a non-profit organisation called the Genetic Literacy Project published FDA documents showing that the assessment had been complete since April and should have been released immediately. The organisation's investigation suggests that the White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), concerned over the issue's sensitivity, had blocked the documents' release until after the presidential election.

Asked about the allegations, the OSTP referred New Scientist to the FDA, whose spokesperson Shelly Burgess declined to comment. But she says that the agency is being particularly cautious as the salmon are the first transgenic animal to reach this point in the approval process.

Final approval of the salmon could still be some way off, however. The public now has 60 days to comment on the documents before the FDA will review them again. Burgess says it is impossible to predict how long the next review might take.

Health Issues Often Associated With The BJJ Sport - Recreation and ...

There is no denying that BJJ is one of the current great sports. It belongs to the category of martial arts and it can be considered as a combat sport. Those who decide to take this up as a sport are all very vocal about how much fun they?re having just learning about it while wearing their BJJ GI. Since it is also known as an effective tool for self-defense, many are looking into it as a way to boost their self-confidence when it comes to protecting themselves. You could even probably foil a robbery attempt if you know even a little bit of BJJ. Many people have to venture out into dangerous territories and shady alleys. Knowing the dangers that lurk in these shadowy places, they decide to learn this sport.

You should know that you can also get yourself a BJJ GI and start learning BJJ. Keep in mind, however, that there are pros and cons to this sport. After all, that is pretty much expected in any sport. There are few health concerns, related to BJJ. Though it seems to be a wonderful martial art, you are at the risk of getting affected by few health problems. Before you start getting into the sport, you should be aware of these. This article will help you to understand the simple problems faced by the JJ GI-wearing learner during the practice of BJJ. This includes skin disorders and cauliflower ear problems.

BJJ practitioners often find themselves using their heads a lot of the time when they attack their opponents. It is the head that gets the most impact during a match. That is clearly demonstrated in actual BJJ matches or even television shows about them. A lot of care would have to be employed when you are facing off against someone in your BJJ GI. Make the mistake of not learning or not practicing the art properly, and you could suffer consequences such as becoming hearing impaired. You could be dealing with some ear damage, and swelling is only one of them. The swollen ear cartilage could become separated away from the perichondrium. It?s very vital to note that the perichondrium is an important part of the ear. The perichondrium pretty much provides much of the nutrients needed by the ear cartilage.

It could also happen that this part of the ear becomes permanently swollen. If you see this happening, you can be sure that things are bound to be serious. This condition is referred to as cauliflower ear formation. This is a condition that could actually affect a person permanently. That is why protective gear for the head is provided for in addition to the BJJ GI; it is to protect the ear from having cauliflower ear formation. You?d best be protecting your skull if you do this. Dermal area concerns will also be more prevalent aside from the ear and skull.

Prolonged practice of BJJ is also bound to put a lot of strain to the muscles, to the extent that the strain could only be described as severe. However, it is the skin problems that are the cause of greatest concerns. When there is too much of skin to skin contact and rubbing, there will be skin abrasion. Unclean mats and unwashed BJJ GI used in BJJ could also be the cause of serious skin problems, not to mention the unhygienic practices of some practitioners. Ring worm disease or herpes infection or staph infection can occur in rare cases. Do not be carried away by the fun and enjoyment of practicing BJJ. You still have to make sure you understand all the possible health risks involved.

Huffmania: Merry Christmas Indeed! - dkfughiu's posterous

Merry Christmas from the Huffmans! ?This year we decided to stay home so we were far from those we love most. We love being in our home and enjoying our family's traditions, but it also leaves an ache in my heart not to be in North Carolina or West Virginia.

In the morning we enjoyed some really fun family time with Nerf guns and a baby stroller as the big hits for the morning. ?We continue to make good use out of the second-hand china cabinet we bought from a family friend. ?While the bottom half is still home to all of our craft supplies, the top half has now been converted into a target board! ?There are Nerf darts all over the cabinet and my house! ? As we love to do on Christmas, Andy and I got up early and enjoyed some quiet with the Lord before the day got rolling. ?That's definitely my favorite part of the day. ?In the afternoon and evening, we spent time with some friends from church as well as some Chinese friends. ?Waffles, Wassail, and Wii. ?(which was hard for our Chinese friends to pronounce!) ?It was really good to be with people we love here.

This was maybe my favorite Christmas ever. ?Not so much because of the day itself, though it was fun. ? ?But mainly because this season gives me reason to really reflect on ?the Christmas story. ?And my heart needs to be reminded of the reason I can celebrate. ?With each passing year, the meaning of Christmas becomes clearer and richer and deeper to me. ?This week, I've been thinking about the phrase in 2 Corinthians, that says, "sorrowful yet always rejoicing." ?I think it best describes how Christians in the world are supposed to live. ?It's a description of our pilgrimage on this earth that touches both the pain of living in a fallen world and the HOPE we have in Christ.

Sorrowful-I do not need to look farther than my own heart to see the damage my sin causes. ?And if I look a little father outside myself, to those around me, I see the pain and bitterness of living in a fallen world, where friends ?and family are grieving losses this year, ?unspeakable pain of losing children, battling things like spina bifida, being unemployed, losing beloved pets, pain from broken relationships. ? The world I live in is broken. ?I've been thinking a lot about the passage that says, the WHOLE CREATION is groaning, eagerly awaiting it's redemption. . ?We too await our adoption as sons and the redemption of our bodies. ?It's so true that every aspect of creation is subject to death, until something undoes that...

The reason we can and SHOULD celebrate on this day is because Jesus came into the fallen, broken, sinful world to change everything. ?He has undone what our sin has done. ?"The weary world rejoices!" ?We are weary from the affects of sin but he has come to save us! ?We can rejoice!!! ? ?I have real hope and joy in this world, not because I pretend the pain isn't there but by looking it square in the face and seeing the Savior who has overcome all of it. ?This is why we rejoice!!! ? ?And Christ is with me, each day, speaking his love to me, guiding me, reminding me of the forgiveness I have in him and the welcome I have with the Father because of him!

So for now, I live as one sorrowful, yet always rejoicing. ?And on Christmas we can take time to really celebrate for we have a great hope-Christ with us today, and the promise of the day when every knee will bow to him and when he will wipe away every tear from our eyes!

Wall Street heads for longest losing streak in three months

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks fell on Friday, putting the S&P 500 on track for a fifth straight decline, as President Barack Obama and top congressional leaders were set to make a last-ditch attempt to steer the country away from severe fiscal austerity next year.

Obama and lawmakers from both political parties will meet at the White House on Friday afternoon for talks in an effort to agree on a solution before a New Year's deadline to keep large tax hikes and spending cuts from taking effect. Economists say that combination of automatic higher taxes and lower government spending - known as the "fiscal cliff" - could push the U.S. economy into a recession.

Trading was volatile and stocks rebounded from their session lows after unconfirmed reports that President Obama was about to offer a new plan to Republicans.

But investors' pessimism about achieving anything more than a stop-gap deal by the deadline was reflected in the benchmark S&P 500's drop of 1.3 percent so far this week. The broad index was on pace for its worst weekly performance since mid-November.

A five-day decline would be the S&P 500's longest losing streak in three months.

"There's a pretty good chance that we won't have something in hand by year-end," said Jonathan Golub, chief U.S. equity strategist at UBS, in New York. "It should be pretty obvious that that is now the majority case."

Golub, however, said investors were still counting on a deal that would avoid most of the tax hikes and spending cuts next year even if it does come after the deadline.

"It is widely believed that we're going to get a deal," he said. "We are not going to go over the cliff to the extent that we have a huge economic contraction."

With time running short, members of Congress may attempt to pass a retroactive fix to neutralize tax increases and spending cuts soon after the automatic fiscal policies come into effect on January 1.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> fell 65.65 points, or 0.50 percent, to 13,030.66. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> dropped 6.03 points, or 0.43 percent, to 1,412.07. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> slipped 7.29 points, or 0.24 percent, to 2,978.62.

"It doesn't matter which side wins, but at this point, nobody wants to play a game where there aren't rules," said Joe Costigan, director of equity research at Bryn Mawr Trust, in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.

"So everybody is talking about what the prospects are for changes in the rules. But at the end of the day, nothing is happening."

Highlighting Wall Street's sensitivity to developments in Washington, stocks tumbled slightly more than 1 percent on Thursday after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid warned that a deal was unlikely before the deadline. But late in the day, the three major U.S. stock indexes rebounded and ended down just 0.1 percent after the U.S. House of Representatives said it would hold an unusual Sunday session to work on a fiscal solution.

With many investors away for the holiday-shortened week, volume is expected to remain light and that could exacerbate the stock market's swings.

Positive economic data failed to alter the market's downtrend.

The National Association of Realtors said contracts to buy previously owned U.S. homes rose in November to their highest level in 2-1/2 years, while a report from the Institute for Supply Management-Chicago showed business activity in the U.S. Midwest expanded in December.

Barnes & Noble Inc shares rose 6.2 percent to $15.24 after the top U.S. bookstore chain said British publisher Pearson Plc had agreed to make a strategic investment in its Nook Media subsidiary. But Barnes & Noble also said its Nook business will not meet its previous projection for fiscal year 2013.

Shares of magicJack VocalTec Ltd jumped 8.5 percent to $17.67 after the company, which provides VoIP or voice over Internet protocol services, forecast more than $39 million in GAAP revenue and over 70 cents per share in operating income for the fourth quarter. The company also said it has appointed Gerald Vento as president and CEO, effective January 1.

The U.S.-listed shares of Canadian drugmaker Aeterna Zentaris Inc surged 16.1 percent to $2.52 after the company said it had reached an agreement with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on a special protocol assessment by the FDA for a Phase 3 registration trial in endometrial cancer with AEZS-108 treatment.

Las Vegas police investigate discovery of girl's body

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) ? Police investigating the week-old disappearance of a 10-year-old Las Vegas girl said Thursday they think they found the child's body in an undeveloped housing tract in North Las Vegas.

Authorities couldn't immediately confirm the body was Jade Morris pending positive identification and notification of family members by the Clark County coroner, Las Vegas police homicide Capt. Chris Jones said.

But, "I can tell you that the likelihood is that this is our victim," Jones said.

He also said that the body belongs to a black girl.

Coroner Michael Murphy said he did not expect positive identification until Friday.

Jade was last seen by her family at about 5 p.m. Dec. 21 when Brenda Stokes picked her up for a shopping outing, police said. Police said Stokes was a trusted friend of the girl's father, and family members have told reporters that the two dated for several years.

Stokes, who also uses the name Brenda Wilson, was later arrested after she was accused of slashing a co-worker with razor blades at the Bellagio resort casino.

Stokes, 50, is now in jail and Jones said she has not cooperated in the investigation about the girl's whereabouts.

A passer-by called 911 about noon Thursday, and North Las Vegas police found a girl's body in unkempt brush near palm trees in a small traffic circle near Dorrell Lane and North 5th Street.

The location is a short distance from the northern 215 Beltway and about 10 miles from the downtown Las Vegas outlet mall off Interstate 15 where Stokes was to have taken the girl shopping.

Attempts by The Associated Press to reach family members on Thursday were unsuccessful.

Stokes picked up the girl about 5 p.m., and two hours later returned to another friend the red 2007 Saab sedan that she borrowed for the shopping trip, Jones said.

Later, Stokes got a ride with a friend to the Bellagio resort on the Las Vegas Strip, where she was arrested after allegedly attacking a female co-worker, Joyce Rhone, with a razor in each hand as Rhone dealt blackjack about 9:30 p.m.

Rhone, 44, was hospitalized with deep cuts on her face, including one from her ear to the edge of her mouth. A police arrest report said Rhone also had several smaller cuts around her right eye.

Records show that Stokes was being held Thursday on $60,000 bail at the Clark County jail on felony battery with a weapon, burglary and mayhem charges that could get her decades in prison.

She told a judge Wednesday that she had not obtained a lawyer. She was due again in Las Vegas Justice Court on Friday.

The arrest report says casino video shows Stokes attacking Rhone before a casino patron and security officers intervene. Officer Marcus Martin said the video is evidence that may be shown by prosecutors in court but will not be made public by police.

Police said Stokes later told investigators that she attacked Rhone over harassing phone calls and an unspecified betrayal that ended their seven-year friendship.

Stokes also told police she visited her doctor last week, seeking to be admitted to a hospital "due to feeling like she wanted to hurt someone."

She is reported to have told investigators she hadn't taken a prescription anti-anxiety drug on Friday, and that, "Sometimes people just snap."

Smart TV owners seemingly tuning out most apps

3 hrs.

They may be called smart TVs, but that doesn?t stop the vast majority of us from using them as basic boob tubes. A new NPD Group report claims that most people use their Internet-enabled televisions to stream video services like Netflix or Hulu Plus, and?? actually, not much else.

Streaming music services manage to entertain around 15 percent of smart TV owners, but all of the more ballyhooed interactive aspects of Internet-enabled TVs???think Facebook, Twitter, Web browsers, and all those apps, games, and email widgets that come preloaded in newer HDTVs???are left completely untouched by most people.

The NPD Group?chalks the trend?up to a few different factors, the biggest of which being the simple fact that most people consider televisions sets to be, well, televisions???not computing devices. The proliferation of secondary Internet-enabled devices (like consoles and Blu-ray players) and the rise of local digital streaming options (like AirPlay, DLNA, and Samsung AllShare) may also be both confusing customers and cannibalizing traditional smart TV services, NPD theorizes.

We?ll add another possible factor: The molasses-slow processors in most smart TVs make anything beyond simple content streaming a major usability pain. Trying to browse your Facebook News Feed on a television is often a tremendously laggy exercise in frustration.

Fortunately, consumer disinterest in the Internet-enabled bells and whistles may just make the basic video-streaming functions of smart TVs more pleasant to use going into the future???at least if manufacturers listen to the NPD?s closing advice: ?Focus less on new innovation in this space and more on simplification of the user experience.?

Why Many Payday Loan Customers Use the ... - 50 Plus Finance

Over the years, the usefulness of payday loans has continued to increase. For many of the population payday loans are used as a quick source of cash in an emergency. The unforeseen costs of seeing a doctor or having a needed car repair done can force many to overdraft their bank accounts or exceed the credit limit of a credit card.?Many?still write that check or charge on their credit card. Your bank gladly makes your check good and charges you a fee of $40 or more. The credit card company also rewards you with an over credit limit fee and raises your monthly APR.
Even with all the negative press payday loans get, they are actually cheaper than going into overdraft, for short term cash needs. The average fee for $100 of credit is $17.60 at a payday loan compared to bank overdraft fees of $30-$35 in 2012(FDIC).

Overdraft fees are more of a problem with people who carry a low balance in their account. Not going into overdraft and saving the penalty fees associated with it can add up to a real savings over time.

"When used on a recurring basis for small amounts, the annualized percentage rate for fee-based bounce [overdraft] protection far exceeds the APRs associated with payday loans."

Sheila Bair

Former Chairman

Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation

Like all financial obligations, payday loans need to be taken seriously by the borrower and the lender. How do you know if your lender is a?legitimate?concern and obeying the laws for payday loan lenders in their state.

Go to the website of the lender you want to use. Look for an "About Us" link. An upstanding company has extensive information about themselves. Look for information about their license to operate in the state. Do they provide complete contact information. Look for links and phone numbers of state regulatory departments with contact information. Use the information and call the states regulatory division and ask questions.?

Also look for the emblem of the?Community Financial Services Association of America. This association sets guidelines and best practices that ensure responsible conduct among lenders, protect borrowers? rights, and encourage self-governance of the payday advance industry. Their website has a hotline where you can voice concerns and problems you are having with the lender.

Payday loans should be used for short-term financial needs only, not as a long-term solution.?Customers with credit difficulties should seek credit counseling. For more information go to?USA Cash Services Website

HBT: Lions' Hanson undecided about return or retirement

Lomas Brown LionsGetty Images

A funny thing happened in the course of Lomas Brown trying to walk back his claim last week that he once intentionally missed a block in order to get his teammate Scott Mitchell injured: Brown says he has discovered that his memory is wrong, and the play on which he purposely missed a block is different than the play on which Mitchell suffered a season-ending injury.

That?s what Brown told Gregg Doyel of CBS: According to Brown, the former Lions left tackle who is now an ESPN commentator, ESPN went through its archives and found the play that ended Mitchell?s season, and it wasn?t the same play that Brown remembered.

After Brown?s boast about purposely getting Mitchell hurt became a hot topic in the NFL this week, someone posted a video on YouTube that appears to show the play that got Mitchell hurt in a loss to the Packers. That play does show Brown lining up at left tackle and turning to the inside, leaving Packers right defensive end Sean Jones alone to rush to the outside and get a free shot at Mitchell. But as the New York Times noted, there?s really no way to know whether Brown was supposed to block Jones on that play and intentionally let him go, or whether the Lions? pass protection on that play called for Brown to block to the inside.

Brown?s memory of the 1994 game is faulty. He described the Lions as being down 24-3 at the time he missed his block, but the score of that game was never 24-3. Based on the YouTube video, it appears that the score was actually 10-0 when Mitchell was hurt. And Brown?s description of the play suggests that he initially engaged Jones but then let him go, while the video shows Brown turning inside at the snap and never going near Jones.

In any event, whether Mitchell?s injury actually happened on a play on which Brown intentionally missed a block isn?t particularly important. Either (1) Brown tried to injure a teammate and succeeded, or (2) Brown tried to injure a teammate and failed but happened to get his wish because the teammate got injured on another play in the same game. Brown initially claimed option 1 but now claims option 2. Neither of those options reflects well on Brown.

The third option is that Brown fabricated a story about intentionally injuring a teammate because he thought that would be a swell way to get attention. That sounds ridiculous, but considering that Brown makes his living by appearing on ESPN First Take, a show that encourages its panelists to seek attention by making outrageous statements, it?s plausible.

If that?s what happened, and Brown has now discovered that the attention he generated is unwanted, claiming that he wasn?t actually responsible for Mitchell?s injury might be Brown?s way of attempting to minimize the damage to his reputation. But whatever Brown may say now, his reputation has been permanently tarnished.
