LA trees hold up shuttle journey

The final journey of the retired US space shuttle Endeavour through Los Angeles aboard a giant trolley has been delayed by trees along the route.

The spacecraft that once reached 17,000mph (28,160km/h) has been trundling down the city's famously low-level boulevards at a stately 2mph.

But technical hitches mean it did not reach its final destination, a museum, on Saturday, as planned.

Its wing had to be manoeuvred around trees too valuable to be cut down.

Thousands of Los Angeles residents turned out to see it pass.

A tight squeeze in the streets of Los Angeles

Endeavour began its 12-mile journey from Los Angeles international airport on Friday and is due to end up at the California Science Center.

The 75-ton spacecraft entered service in 1992, making 25 trips, logging 123m miles and circling the globe almost 4,700 times.

Replacing Challenger, which was destroyed in an accident in 1986 that killed seven astronauts, Endeavour was the baby of the shuttle fleet.

Nasa took its shuttles out of service last year in order to focus on destinations beyond low-Earth orbit, such as asteroids and Mars.

The three other surviving shuttles are already in museums or will be eventually

  • Enterprise is on display at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City
  • Discovery is on display at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC
  • Atlantis is due to be put on display at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida
Bridge crossing

For its trip across Los Angeles, Endeavour has been placed on a 160-wheeled carrier which is being guided by remote control.

It set off on Friday from the airport, where it had arrived three weeks ago aboard a specially equipped Boeing 747.

After an early bumpy ride, it was backed into a shopping centre car park in the city's Westchester neighbourhood as crowds cheered.

A delicate task was accomplished around midnight Friday local time (07:00 GMT Saturday), when Endeavour crossed a bridge over the Interstate 405 highway.

Crews had spent hours transferring the shuttle to a special, lighter towing dolly, which was then pulled across by a pickup truck.

When the journey resumed in daylight, the operators soon found themselves up against trees, despite the advance removal of 400 along the route.

Most of the "problem" trees could not be cut down because they were old or were treasured for other reasons - some had been planted in honour of Martin Luther King.

Crew members had to come up with creative solutions such as dipping a wing under branches, cutting them off or raising it over the trees.

Longer than expected maintenance of the carrier and other physical obstacles such as lamp-posts and building edges added to the delays.

However, spectators generally remained good-humoured, the Associated Press news agency reports.

The shuttle is now expected to arrive at the museum on Sunday morning local time.

'Inspirational'

The shuttle passed down many streets that were in flames two decades ago during the Rodney King riots.

"Having a shuttle come through this area of high poverty, it can only be a good thing," said bookshop worker Damian Pipkins.

"It's pretty neat to see a spaceship in the street," a spectator told local TV elsewhere.

Former shuttle commander Mark Kelly, who captained Endeavour's final flight, said he hoped the spacecraft would become an inspiration for future generations of astronauts.

"Maybe some day one of these kids that see Endeavour, look up at it at the California Science Center, will be that person that walks on the planet Mars?" he told US broadcaster CNN.

Mali Islamists tell France they will open doors of hell

BAMAKO (Reuters) - Al Qaeda-linked Islamists in Mali threatened on Saturday to "open the doors of hell" for French citizens if France kept pushing for armed intervention to retake the rebel-held north.

The renewed threats against French hostages and expatriates came as French-speaking nations met in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where French President Francois Hollande was expected to urge the rapid deployment of an African-led force to rout the Islamists.

Hollande said the threat would not deter France's determination to quash the Islamists in Mali.

"If he continues to throw oil on the fire, we will send him the pictures of dead French hostages in the coming days," said Oumar Ould Hamaha, a spokesman for Islamist group MUJWA, in apparent reference to the six French nationals still held by armed groups after being seized in the region.

"He will not be able to count the bodies of French expatriates across West Africa and elsewhere," Hamaha said by telephone.

MUJWA is among the Islamist groups which seized control of the northern two-thirds of Mali when fighters swept into the territory in April following a coup in the capital Bamako.

Regional and Western powers are now considering armed intervention to retake the area, with former colonial ruler France seeking swift military action by regional bloc ECOWAS.

The U.N. Security Council called on Friday for an intervention plan to be drawn up within 45 days after passing a French-drafted resolution to revive attempts to end the crisis.

Hollande on Saturday dismissed the MUJWA threat, saying it would not alter its stance on Mali.

"We have always said that we would always do everything to secure the release of our hostages," he told a news conference in Kinshasa. "Should we tone down our message on the integrity of Mali, on the fight against terrorism, because of these threats? I think it's quite the opposite."

"It's by showing our determination to stand by our position of fighting terrorism that we can convince the abductors that it is time to free our hostages," he added.

Al Qaeda's north African wing has threatened repeatedly to kill French hostages if Paris tries to mount a military intervention in Mali.

Seven workers for French firm Areva were seized in northern Niger in 2010, and all but four have since been released. Two other French citizens were taken hostage in Mali in November.

MUJWA's Hamaha said that Islamists in the Sahara desert were largely funded by ransom payments from France and others.

"The top country who finances the jihadis is France," he said, adding that MUJWA could try to kidnap Hollande himself. "I wonder what the international community would say if we took the French president hostage."

Sony VAIO Duo 11 (D11213CX)

In the coming crush of hybrid ultrabooks?all made to make the most of Windows 8?Sony has the distinction of being the first to reach the PC Labs with the Sony VAIO Duo 11 (D11213CX). It comes with a touch screen that takes advantage of Windows 8 touch functionality, as well as a fast 128GB solid-state drive (SSD) and a third-generation Intel Core processor. The hybrid design of the Duo 11 stills has some kinks to work out, and it isn't helped by short battery-life, software glitches, or a design that is uncomfortable to hold.

Design
The VAIO Duo 11 is a convertible ultrabook, meaning that it functions both as a laptop and as a tablet. The transformation relies on what Sony calls the "Smooth Surf Slider design," a spring-loaded sliding hinge mechanism. Lift the back edge of the screen and pull back and up, and the screen slides up into a laptop-like position. Unfortunately, those are the only two positions available, and adjusting the screen angle in laptop mode is out of the question. Also, be careful not to stick anything in the gap behind the screen, below the hinge?exposed springs and ribbon cables could easily be damaged if you tried to close the system on a foreign object.

The 11.6-inch screen adds capacitive touch and 10-finger tracking to the gorgeous 1920-by-1080 resolution IPS display, which not only looks great, it's also a huge step up from the 1366-by-768 resolution display seen on the likes of the Samsung Series 7 Slate (700T1A) or the Toshiba Portege Z935-P300 ultrabook. Gorilla Glass protects the screen from scratches and scuffs, which is important, because even when closed?in tablet form?the display is exposed. One maddening quirk: The touch screen would occasionally stop registering touch input while in laptop mode. Sometimes this could be fixed by switching into tablet mode and back; other times it required power-cycling the laptop. When touch is a major feature in your device, it behooves you to make sure that it works properly.

When closed in tablet mode, the Duo 11 measures 0.71 by 12.60 by 7.84 inches (HWD) and it weighs only 2.9 pounds thanks to a lightweight magnesium-alloy frame and glossy black plastic chassis. It's thin and light enough for use as a tablet, but weight isn't the only factor to consider. The burnished black plastic gathered not only smudges, but also scuffs, which you don't want to see on a device that will be handled constantly. The angular lines of the VAIO Duo 11 are in keeping with the design ID used throughout the VAIO line. It looks great while the Duo is in laptop mode, but the jutting angles and sharp edges aren't comfortable to hold in tablet mode. If there's a flaw in the design, this is it.

The chiclet keyboard is smaller than those usually seen on 11-inch laptops, with no palmrest to speak of, and a shallow typing depth, even for an ultrabook. The full-size keyboard also has slightly undersized keys, making the spacing a bit wider than you'll find on most chiclet keyboards. In the center of the chiclet keyboard is an optical mouse, similar to the optical trackpoint seen on the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2. The optical sensor has a polished, rounded surface, which fingertips glide over easily, but it's a different experience than you'll have with a regular trackpad because it's highly sensitive. The mouse buttons are located on the edge of the keyboard, just below the spacebar. The size and dimensions of the hybrid laptop don't provide room for a palmrest.

Finally, Sony overlooked what should have been a basic detail. The Duo 11 comes with a digitizer stylus for handwriting and drawing with the tablet, but nowhere on the tablet will you find either storage for the stylus or any sort of tether point to attach it to. Sony does offer an accessory sleeve for the Duo 11, which includes stylus storage, but without it, the average user will find their laptop and pen separated rather quickly. Thankfully, any Wacom digitizer stylus can be used. Aside from this oversight, using the stylus is great, with 256 levels of pressure sensitivity and automatic palm-rejection letting you rest your wrist on the screen as you would with pen and paper, without causing any problems.

Features
Because the VAIO Duo 11 doubles as a tablet, you'll also find ports and buttons all over the device, rather than grouping them entirely on the right and left sides of the chassis. Some of these connections are standard for ultrabooks, like two USB 3.0 ports (one with power for charging devices while the system is asleep), a card slot (SD/MS), a compact Ethernet port, and 3.5mm stereo headphone jack. Bluetooth 4.0 lets you pair the latest Windows 8 peripherals, and 802.11n Wi-Fi keeps you connected as you roam from room to room. An HDMI port and VGA output let you connect to an external HDTV or monitor, but the Duo 11 is also WiDi-capable, letting you wirelessly stream through any WiDi adapter, like the Netgear Push2TV.

Business users aren't left out either, as the VAIO Duo 11 has integrated Trusted Platform Module (TPM), Symantec Validation and ID Protection Service (VIP), Intel Anti-Theft Technology, and a connection for a desktop port replicator.

Others features have clearly come from the tablet side of the equation, such as the front- and rear-facing 2.4-megapixel cameras and the screen rotation lock button. Internal sensors now include GPS, Accelerometer, Gyro, and Digital Compass. Newer features not seen on previous laptops or tablets include the soon-to-be-ubiquitous Windows Key button, effectively a physical home or start button on the front of the tablet, which duplicates the function of your keyboard's Windows key. Other physical action buttons include volume controls and a screen orientation lock button. Finally, Sony has also built-in Near-Field Communication (NFC) technology, used for pairing the Duo 11 to any device with Sony One-Touch technology, such as the Sony SRS-BTM8 Bluetooth wireless speaker and MDR-1RBT Bluetooth headphones.

Sony has outfitted the VAIO Duo 11 with a 128GB SSD, which makes for speedy two-second boot and wake times, and boosts day-to-day performance. It's the same capacity offered in the Toshiba Portege Z935-P300, but the Asus Zenbook Prime UX32VD-DB71 offers a larger 500GB spinning hard drive?because of the moving parts, traditional hard drives aren't well-suited to tablets that will pick up and move in normal use. There's also no room for an optical drive in the slim confines of a convertible ultrabook, so those still using DVDs will need an external drive.

Sony doesn't waste the chance to share a number of preinstalled programs and apps. When you first see the Start Screen, you'll be greeted by a number of VAIO branded apps (VAIO Care, VAIO Message Center, VAIO Update, and VAIO Control Center), along with app tiles for HuluPlus, Kaspersky Now, Skype, and Slacker Radio. The Kaspersky app is tied to a 30-day trial of Kaspersky Internet Security, and you'll also find a trial version of Microsoft Office 2013. Sony PlayMemories Home provides a simple hub for organizing, viewing, editing and sharing images and videos. Sony Album and Sony Music let you organize your media and stream to DLNA compatible TVs and audio systems. Sony SocialLife is more of a meta-app, consolidating social media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube) and news feeds into a single attractive interface. For showing off the digitizer stylus mentioned above, Sony includes Sony Note Anytime, a handwriting recognition app for note taking, and also throws in a copy of ArtRage Studio Pro, letting you doodle and draw to your heart's content.

Sony covers the VAIO Duo 11 with a one-year warranty plus toll-free phone support. Additional accessories are also available for the Duo 11, including a protective sleeve, and a secondary battery slice.

Performance
Sony VAIO Duo 11 (D11213CX) The VAIO Duo 11 is equipped with the same third-generation Intel Core i5-3317U processor (1.7GHz) used in the Toshiba Portege Z935-P300 and other ultrabooks. The VAIO Duo 11 posted a solid 2.4 point score in Cinebench R11.5, identical to the score of the Toshiba Z935-P300, which uses the same processor. Paired with 8GB of RAM and the aforementioned 128GB SSD, the VAIO Duo 11 offers decent productive capability, as evidenced by its PCMark 7 score of 4,648 points. While it falls short of the Toshiba Z935-P300 (5,477 points) it's significantly more powerful than the Samsung Series 7 Slate (2,352 points) which sports a second-generation Intel Core processor, and is one of the few x86 Windows tablets we've reviewed up to this point.

Sony VAIO Duo 11 (D11213CX)

Intel's integrated graphics processing (Intel HD Graphics 4000) provides enough visual oomph for multimedia and casual games, which is perfect for the touch-based gaming available on the Duo 11. As a result, it scored 1,117 points in 3DMark 11 (on Entry settings), and completed the updated Handbrake video encoding test in 1 minute 25 seconds. For most media tasks, like editing photos or loading graphics-intensive Web pages, this is more than enough graphics capability. High-end gaming, however, is out of reach on this system, as evidenced by unplayable scores in both of our gaming tests, Heaven and Alien vs. Predator; both tests produced an unplayable 12 frames per second when set to lower resolution (1366-by-768) and medium detail (anti-aliasing off).

The VAIO Duo 11 lasted 3 hours 9 minutes in a video rundown test, falling short of the 4:45 Sony estimates in press materials. While the test isn't as varied or detailed as MobileMark?our normal battery test?it does paint a clear picture for the average user. Three hours may make it through two (shorter) movies back to back, but isn't enough time to take you through a full day of work or school. It's especially irritating in the tablet form-factor?plugging in a laptop isn't that big a hassle since they are fairly stationary during use, but it will seriously cramp the use-it-anywhere convenience of a tablet.

While there will be plenty of comparisons made in the coming weeks, the Sony VAIO Duo 11 doesn't make the best first-impression for the emerging hybrid ultrabook category. As an ultrabook the Duo 11's awkward keyboard and short battery-life hamper the productive potential it might have had. As a tablet, the design is uncomfortable and the short battery-life cripples the convenience and entertainment value. The Sony VAIO Duo 11 shows promise, but there's plenty of room to improve.

iPod Touch review: It satisfies most iPhone envy

1 day

How do you get as close to owning an iPhone without actually owning an iPhone? It's not really a trick question?? you already?know the answer if you're reading this review.

The fifth-generation iPod Touch borrows a bit from each of the recent iPhone generations. It has a display identical to the one found on the iPhone 5, guts equivalent to some of those in the iPhone 4S,?and?a camera system similar???but significantly superior? to what's crammed inside the iPhone 4. It runs a full-fledged version of iOS 6, the latest version of the mobile operating system used by the iPhone (and iPad, for that matter).

While all of these details are fine and dandy, it isn't until you handle the new Touch that you fully realize just how mind-boggling the device is. At six millimeters?? just under a quarter inch?? thin, the Touch?makes even the ridiculously airy iPhone 5 feel chubby. The Touch?looks like it should be fragile, as if you need to cradle it?gently while wearing soft, white gloves, yet it's anything but delicate. Its?anodized?aluminum back is solid, reassuring. You might feel the insane urge to bend or throw the gadget, just to see if it can take the abuse. (I suggest avoiding?succumbing?to this strange desire though. No one likes a shattered display.)

The fifth-generation Touch is the first to have a built-in flash and auto-focus system. These features???combined with a 5-megapixel camera, Apple's A5?processor, and a pile of software improvements, not to mention Wi-Fi connectivity to iCloud, email and a bunch of other ways to share photos ? mean that you may just toss out your old?point-and-shoot camera. Don't be surprised if a friend with an iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 takes crisper snapshots though, because those camera systems have an edge on the one in the new?Touch.

The battery life on the Touch seems to be excellent. Apple suggests that the device will offer up to 40 hours of music playback on a full charge and I haven't managed to drain it over two days of moderate usage. Do keep in mind that you'll need the included Lightning cable to charge the new Touch (and that your spare 30-pin cables are useless here.)

The Touch has a quirky little addition: A little color-matched?lanyard. If you press a button?on the lower back of the Touch, it pops out, and that's where you attach the wrist strap. If you don't care about the little loop, you can ignore it completely, but if you do want to use it, it's there.

NBC News tech?editor Wilson Rothman and photographer Jim Seida both love the loop, for its design and for its iPod-saving function when you're, say, leaning off of a tall building to take a picture. But?I can't quite bring myself to use it, mainly for fear that I'll accidentally fling the Touch across a room or somehow swing it with enough force to make the loop slide off its little button. (When Rothman and Seida tried to unhook it through aggressive use, it stayed fast.)

So, the big question, is the iPod Touch worth its?price tag? The new Touch starts at $299, while the?iPhone 5 ? under an expensive 2-year carrier contract ? starts at $199 (with the iPhone 4S at a mere $99).?

The new Touch is a powerful, gorgeous little beast. No other device will get you this close to an iPhone straight out of the box. It doesn't require contracts, it won't come with monthly bills, and did I mention it's so easy on the eyes that you might feel a bit of lust?

But the Touch doesn't have built-in GPS capabilities (beyond Wi-Fi-based location guessing), it doesn't have a camera?quite?as great?as the one in the iPhone 5, it doesn't have Apple's latest A6 processor (meaning that it'll struggle to keep up with iOS updates sooner than its more powerful iPhone siblings), and it's priced a bit steeply.

But if you are stuck on a dumbphone or enjoy your Android but want to know how the other half lives, ?this all-in-one media-player-slash-basic-point-and-shoot-slash-kinda-sorta-tablet will?do the job.?

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Syria rebels capture air defense base, fight to hold highway

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian rebels captured an air defense base east of Aleppo on Friday as government forces battled insurgents on several fronts across the country, activists said.

Clashes were also taking place at a military barracks close to Maarat al-Nuaman, a town on the main highway to the northwestern city of Aleppo which was seized by rebel forces earlier this week, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The pro-opposition Observatory gave a death toll for Thursday of more than 260 people, including civilians and combatants on both sides in violence in the capital and the north, west and east.

It said 92 soldiers were killed on Thursday, which would be one of the highest daily casualty counts on the government side since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad broke out in March 2011.

The official SANA news agency also reported fighting nationwide and said dozens of rebels, which it called "mercenary terrorists", had been killed.

The reports could not be independently verified but they indicate a rapidly intensifying conflict, with the death tolls of the past several weeks far exceeding previous months.

Although international attention has focused on the Turkish border in the past week, Aleppo and the city of Homs - north of Damascus and near the border with Lebanon - are being fought over and clashes take place almost daily in the suburbs of the capital Damascus as well as in the countryside.

Turkey scrambled two fighter planes to the border with Syria on Friday after a Syrian military helicopter bombed the Syrian border town of Azmarin.

The Observatory said the air defense base seized by the rebels was located in al-Tana village by the Koris military airport on the road east from Aleppo to al-Raqqa.

Aleppo, Syria's largest city and commercial hub, has been contested since July. The rebel capture of Maarat al-Nuaman cut the highway between Aleppo and Homs, the main route for the government to resupply and reinforce the northern city.

SANA said government forces were mounting operations to clear Aleppo's Karm al-Jabal area of rebels on Friday.

More than 30,000 people have been killed in the conflict which started out as a popular uprising against four decades of Assad family rule then descended into civil war. The armed forces have relied heavily on air power and artillery to hold back the rebels.

Fighting has also spilled over the borders into Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, raising concern that the fighting could spread across the region, now home to 340,000 Syrian refugees.

Meningitis Outbreak Grows to 170 Cases, 14 Deaths

The number of people with a rare fungal form of meningitis tied to steroid injections is now up to 170, including 14 who have died, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said today (Oct. 11).

Cases have been reported in 11 states. Yesterday, Idaho became the first Western state to report a case, the CDC said.

Tennessee has the most infected people, with 49 cases, followed by Michigan with 39 cases, and Virginia with 30 cases. The other states reporting cases are Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Jersey and Ohio.

The outbreak is linked to steroid injections produced by the New England Compounding Center in Framingham, Mass. Patients affected by the outbreak received injections of steroids in their spines as a treatment for lower back pain. [See: 5 Meningitis Facts You Need to Know.]

An investigation of the NECC facility found fungal contamination, according to the Food and Drug Administration. All products made by NECC have been recalled.

The CDC continues to urge doctors to contact any patients who received the recalled steroid injections, which were used starting on May 21, 2012.

The rising number of cases in the meningitis outbreak does not mean doctors are still using the tainted drugs. Symptoms may take four weeks to appear, so people who received shots before the recall may still develop meningitis. Meningitis is a swelling or inflammation of the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord (which are called the meninges). Common causes of meningitis are viruses and bacteria, but it can also be caused by fungus or parasites. Fungal meningitis is not contagious.

So far, 10 meningitis patients were confirmed to be infected with the fungus Exserohilum, while one case involved the fungus Aspergillus, the CDC says.

The CDC and FDA will release more information about the outbreak to reporters later today.

Pass it on: An outbreak of fungal meningitis has grown to include 170 people in 11 states.

4 Blogging Tips for Powerful Digital Insurance Marketing | Business ...

blogging Blogging can be a daunting prospect for anyone. Even people with writing experience can feel uncomfortable when sat in front of a keyboard and a blank page. So it can be tough for insurance agent to do the same. Even though you write documents, speak to big groups of people and give advice all day, every day. It can be hard to imagine doing it for a website.

However blogging is an incredibly powerful online marketing tool. It can help build trust, draw traffic to your site and even generate leads. If you want to be successful at digital insurance marketing, you need to blog. Do feel uneasy about the idea of blogging? Or do you think you don?t know what to write about or how to structure it? Don?t worry; we?re here to help.

Keep it Simple

The most important thing in blogging is to keep it simple. There are often many different facets to insurance issues, and it?s natural to want to cover them all. But that can lead to over long or overly technical blogs; neither of which are likely to draw readers. When people read blogs, they?re not looking for all the answers. They want to read something interesting that improves their understanding, not a technical manual.

If you?re writing about a particular coverage type or policy, it?s okay to use broad terms. Obviously you need to keep the information factually correct, but you should keep complex details to a minimum. Don?t try to over explain, use metaphors and basic real world examples. Digital insurance marketing is about connecting with people. Going back over minor details to ensure you?ve covered everything will only scare them away.

Use Lists, Tips and Sections

The ultimate target of you digital insurance marketing should be to make insurance appear more approachable. Your blog should look approachable too. Break things down into bite size pieces of text, rather than writing in a single block. The most successful blogs are ?how to?s and lists, you should keep that in mind when you structure your blog posts.

This can also help in idea generation. If you want to blog about risk management for example, you?ll have encountered risk management mistakes clients have made in the past. A list of those is an ideal starting point for a blog. Write the list out in one-line descriptions first, and then fill in the blanks. Those blogs practically write themselves.

Break Down Jargon

People are very wary of insurance terms they don?t understand. This provides two great tips to keep in mind when you?re planning a blog post. Firstly, avoid unnecessary jargon if you can. Just because you know what deductibles are, doesn?t mean your clients do. If there?s a more mainstream term, use it.

Secondly, you can use people?s wariness of insurance jargon to your advantage. Digital insurance marketing material that makes insurance less daunting is what you should strive for. So a blog that simply explains complex insurance details can be quite successful.

Give Advice

As an insurance agent, you spend a lot of your day giving advice to clients. You advise them on risk management procedures on policy changes and even on business practice. For the majority of this advice, you get no financial compensation whatsoever. There?s no reason your digital insurance marketing content can?t do the same thing.

When people do online research, they?re really looking for help. If they get that help from you, they?re likely to come back to you for more advice. It?s important you don?t hold back on advice because you feel you?re giving it away for free. The value of good advice goes way beyond the commission you earn on a new insurance policy. Good advice builds trust and helps you stand out in the marketplace. The more helpful you are for free, the more trustworthy you appear as an agent.

Good digital insurance marketing should boost your reputation. It should cut through the old insurance stereotypes and make prospects want to work with you. A good blog can do all of that. These tips should get you on the right track to creating that powerful blog. The only thing left to do is start.

Global Islamic Finance: Gulf Sukuk Beat Loans for First Time Since ...

Persian Gulf Islamic bond sales are beating Shariah-compliant loans in the Middle East, Europe and Africa for the first time since 2006 as borrowers seize on tumbling yields to finance roads and airports.

Sales of sukuk in the Gulf Cooperation Council have almost quadrupled this year to $18.5 billion as Saudi Arabia?s state- run Civil Aviation Authority and Qatar?s government sold $4 billion each, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Loans that comply with Islam?s ban on interest, by comparison, have risen 57 percent to $11.4 billion in EMEA.

Borrowers in the GCC, home to about a third of global oil reserves, will rely more on Islamic bonds after yields dropped to a record, Standard & Poor?s said in a report on Oct. 8. GCC sukuk sales make up about half of this year?s record $38.3 billion of global sales. The average yield on global sukuk fell 103 basis points, or 1.03 percentage points, in the period to a record 2.96 yesterday, according to the HSBC/NASDAQ Dubai US Dollar Sukuk Index.

?Sukuk are becoming a legitimate competitor for traditional Islamic loans and you will see them staying like that for a while,? Abdul Kadir Hussain, chief executive officer of Mashreq Capital DIFC, which had $265 million in assets under management in June, said by phone from Dubai yesterday. ?It?s now a product that is more known to investors and issuers.?

?FERTILE ENVIRONMENT?

Qatar International Islamic Bank (QIIK) and Riyadh-based Kingdom Holding Co. (KINGDOM), the investment company of Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, are among those that plan to tap the sukuk market. The yield on GCC Islamic bonds slid 121 basis points this year to 3.1 percent, according to the HSBC/NASDAQ. It fell to a record 3.08 percent Sept. 14.

Increased crude production and ?robust? growth in the non-oil economies will lift economic growth among oil exporters in the Middle East and North Africa to 6.6 percent this year from almost 4 percent in 2011, the International Monetary Fund said in its World Economic Outlook report yesterday.

Economic expansion creates a ?fertile environment for credit growth, particularly in the Gulf?s oil-exporting economies,? according to S&P, which rates Qatar and Abu Dhabi AA, the third-highest investment grade and one level above Saudi Arabia, the world?s biggest oil exporter.

?We also expect the project finance sector, including real estate and transport projects, to increasingly rely on sukuk issuance to fund transactions,? said S&P?s credit analyst Karim Nassif.

SAUDI ISSUES

Companies and government agencies in Saudi Arabia, the biggest Arab economy, have raised a record $8 billion from sukuk this year as the state spends more than $500 billion to create jobs, build airports, roads and houses. The aviation authority said in May it plans to issue a second tranche of sukuk to fund the expansion of Riyadh?s airport. Kingdom Holding secured shareholder approval in March to raise as much as 3.75 billion riyals ($1 billion).

Qatar Islamic Bank SAQ (QIBK) raised $750 million from the sale of dollar-denominated sukuk this month at the lowest rate for similar sales by GCC banks this year. Qatar International Islamic Bank said Oct. 4 it mandated HSBC Holdings Plc, Standard Chartered Plc and QNB Capital for a possible sale of dollar- denominated debt.

Shariah-compliant bonds pay returns based on asset values because of the religion?s ban on interest and often involve a sale and purchase agreement. The debt structures need to be reviewed and approved by Shariah scholars to ensure they comply with the religion?s finance rules.

CHALLENGES

Challenges of arranging the securities? structure ?are very much still there? and the industry needs to widen its investor base beyond banks, said Hussain of Mashreq Capital. Tamweel PJSC (TAMWEEL) said in July ?market feedback? prompted the Dubai-based provider of Islamic home loans to cancel the sale of $235 million in residential mortgage-backed bonds, abandoning what would have been the first such transaction in the Middle East since the onset of the global credit crunch.

Sales of sovereign Islamic bonds in the Middle East have been limited to Qatar, Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah and Bahrain, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

The yield on Dubai?s 6.396 percent sukuk due November 2014 tumbled 273 basis points this year to 2.85 percent today, data compiled by Bloomberg show. The premium investors demand to hold Dubai?s sukuk over Malaysia?s investment-grade 3.928 percent notes maturing in June 2015 narrowed 148 basis points this year to 139 today, the data show.

Sukuk pricing ?right now is very good for issuers,? Samer Mardini, vice president of fixed-income and Islamic finance products at Dubai-based SJS Markets Ltd, said by phone Oct. 9. ?Sukuk issuances are going strong now and will continue to do so in the future.

(AP) ? It's described as a "40-acre dry cleaner bag," that, when first filled, will stretch 55 stories high.

On Tuesday, this special ultra-thin helium balloon is scheduled to lift off from Roswell, N.M., to carry Felix Baumgartner 23 miles into the stratosphere for what he hopes will be a history-making, sound barrier-breaking skydive.

WHAT'S THE BALLOON MADE OF?

Strips of plastic film that are 0.0008 inches thick, or thinner than a Ziploc bag. If laid flat, this plastic would cover 40 acres.

WHO MADE IT?

ATA Aerospace of Albuquerque. Company officials said they were not authorized by Red Bull Stratos, which is funding the jump, to talk to the media. A fact sheet says it is designed after previous balloons used for over 60 years on high-altitude flights.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS?

Helium balloons can easily be torn by the wind, so the launch will not take place unless wind speeds are less than 2 mph.

HAS IT BEEN TESTED?

No. Balloons of this type are so delicate that once out of the box they must be used immediately. The launch crew must wear clothing that can't snag it. Handlers must wear cotton gloves. Balloons used in test jumps were similar but smaller because they didn't have to go as high.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Helium is lighter than air, so the size depends on the weight of the payload and the altitude it must reach.

HOW BIG IS IT?

It can hold nearly 30 million cubic feet of helium, enough to hoist the 3,000-pound capsule carrying Baumgartner.

HOW LONG IS THE ASCENT?

2 ? to 3 hours.

WHAT HAPPENS TO IT AFTER?

It will be separated from the capsule and parachute to earth.

When determining how to invest your money for future financial security or growth, there are primarily two ways to do it; real investments and investments in financial instruments. Real investments involve the purchase of property, such as land, real estate and property, plant and equipment. Investments in financial instruments involve placing your money in things like stocks, bonds, T-bills and the foreign exchange market.

Both real investments and financial instrument investments are used to increase the value of money to beat the effects of inflation over time, usually for retirement, inheritance or security purposes. However, there is no guarantee that an investment in anything will result in monetary gain. In fact, some investments are toxic. This means that their values are so low, investors ending up losing money.

Real investments are applicable to entrepreneurs and small businesses for two reasons; the purchase of property is necessary to do business, and entrepreneurs must find people who are willing to invest in their business model. For example, a small textile manufacturer must purchase a factory and the equipment used to weave fabric. Most entrepreneurs do not have enough money in their personal bank accounts to purchase such high-dollar items, so they must look to venture capital, crowd funding or small business loans to help them get their idea off the ground.

Investing in a startup or small business is seen as a high risk, so venture capital firms, crowd funding participants and loan companies are only interested in giving funds to startups that show potential. Independently, each source of funding also differs in what it expects back from funding a startup. Venture capital firms usually expect to own equity in the companies they invest in. Crowd funding participants sometimes expect to own equity, also, though many invest small amounts of money and expect nothing in return. Small business loan institutions expect business owners to pay off the value of a loan, plus interest, within a fixed term. These types of investments are only insured if the investor and business owner have a contractual agreement that involves a cross-collateral clause or allows the investor to regain their initial investment for any reason.

In terms of the business owner, the money they spend on property and goods for their business are what make the project possible. Some of these investments can be quite expensive, such as the heavy machinery used in manufacturing and construction. These investments must be insured to protect the business owner from damage or loss due to theft, natural disasters or other unforeseen accidents. If they don?t insure their property (or underinsure their property), they put themselves and their investors at risk for bankruptcy.

In terms of proper business insurance, there are numerous companies and plans to choose from, so it can be confusing to determine what type of insurance is ideal for your company. It is important to choose your insurance agent carefully. Businesses can only be well-insured when they work with an agent who understands the needs and vulnerabilities unique to a company. It may take you a while to find a good agent, but you will know when you find him or her. They will be very interested in a thorough analysis of your business before suggesting a plan, and they will want to review the plan with you in detail to help you understand what you are getting. Even once you have a good agent, stay informed about average business insurance rates to avoid overpayment.

If you are in the early stages of fundraising for your startup, it?s wise to start thinking about what kind of insurance your business will need and to begin doing research on different insurance providers and their available plans. Bankers growing more worried about student loans

By Allison Linn, TODAY

Here?s the good news: Bankers seem pretty confident that most Americans will continue to pay off most of their consumer debt on time.

Here?s the bad news: They?re not nearly as optimistic about Americans? ability to deal with ballooning student loan debt.

A new quarterly survey of U.S. banks? risk managers finds that more than six in 10 expect student loan debt delinquencies to increase in the next six months. Only about 13 percent expect delinquencies to decrease.

The survey of 215 risk managers, released Tuesday by the credit risk analysis firm FICO, shows that student loan delinquencies have been worrying bankers for most of the year. Nearly 64 percent of the bankers surveyed in the previous quarter had predicted an increase in student loan delinquencies, and about half were expecting such a rise when the survey was conducted in the first three months of the year.

The survey found that bankers were much more optimistic about Americans? ability to pay off other types of debt.

About two-thirds of the bankers surveyed said they expected delinquency rates on credit card debt to stay the same or go down in the next six months. About three-fourths were expecting delinquency rates for car loans and residential mortgages to stay flat or go down.

Despite worries about rising student loan debt, it appears Americans are continuing to borrow heavily to fund their education. On Friday, the Federal Reserve reported that consumer credit for things like car and student loans rose by nearly $14 billion in August from July. In total, U.S. consumer credit rose by more than $18 billion in August.

Financial experts have traditionally said that it?s OK to borrow some money to pay for college because the investment should pay off with higher earnings and more stable employment. In recent years, many adults also have flocked back to school in the hopes that more education would give them an edge up in a tight job market that increasingly prizes specialized skills.

But the high cost of college and easy access to student loans have left some Americans deeply burdened by debt.

According to the College Board, for students who received a bachelor's degree in the 2007-08 academic year, the median debt load was about $7,960 for public institutions, $17,040 for private, not-for-profit institutions and $31,190 for-profit institutions. The figures include students who graduated with no debt.

How Technology is Changing the Face of Dating ... - Online Dating

Image: http://straightuplove.com

There can be no argument that social media and technology has changed the way we relate and do business today. The same can be said for how we date and manage relationships. Since the emergence of online dating, the industry has ballooned, The Online Dating industry accounted for $1.03 billion in 2007, and the projected growth is $1.65 billion by the end of 2012. Over the last 10 years, the industry recorded 154% of growth for every year. Today in the US, 40 million people have tried online dating and 17% of couples married in the past three years met their partners online (WinkWisely).

The fact that so many people are now meeting online is a direct reflection of the development of new technology. Texting, video chat, email and the ability to ?cyber-stalk? someone on the many social networking sites allows us to bypass the more conventional dating procedures and take dating to the next level.

Evolving technology has vastly improved the way we communicate. It gives us a sense of proximity, closeness and connectedness. Texting and email cater to the shy and reserved and is a less confronting way of communication for some, with less awkward silences and ?first date jitters? getting in the way.? With the hectic lifestyles of others, and those pre-occupied with their professional careers, video dating sites like Seek.ly and the Mixers dating app on Facebook allow individuals to meet through face-to-face video chat. Social networks like Facebook and LinkedIn allow people to search and find information about those they meet online.

As with all technology, there are both advantages and disadvantages. While the advantages of the new communication tools include the immediacy of being able to connect, being able to meet people that have been pre-screened for common interests, personality characteristics and meeting people outside your social circle, there are disadvantages too. It can be difficult to get a real feel of someone through email, text and chat. And of course, there will always be those unscrupulous individuals who lurk online.

Other disadvantages of this rapidly increasing technology is that dating today can be far too focused on searching through the online dating and social networking sites, chatting and texting just to find and maintain relationships. This creates an atmosphere where people spend more time scrutinizing profiles, sifting through and decoding the messages received via social networks than face-to-face with others. Some people even break up online. The dating scene today is creating an environment where people don?t know how to deal with the difficulties of relationships face-to-face and may often use technology to shield themselves.

The key, then, to successfully and productively using technology to find a partner and maintain a healthy relationship is to push past the technology barrier and when you find someone online that you connect with, unplug yourself and spend as much quality face-to-face time with them to build a strong and long-lasting relationship.

Major Patent Case for Monsanto (MON) to Go Before the Supreme ...

The patent system isn?t quite broken. But it?s in need of some serious updating. And the next five years or so of patent litigation will indicate how our current legal system adapts (or doesn?t adapt) to new technology.

Several questions are currently unanswered when it comes to patent law.

Like, what counts as a true innovation? And what sort of ideas can you actually ?own??

The answers will have big impacts on all of our lives. After all, a patent system that?s too rigid stifles innovation. But one that?s too loose can hurt profits, giving companies little incentive to create new ideas.

Finding a middle ground isn?t easy, either. As technology becomes more advanced, patent decisions are getting increasingly complex.

Here are two examples?

Patent Case #1: Myriad Genetics

Myriad Genetics (Nasdaq: MYGN) developed a revolutionary test that can determine a woman?s genetic predisposition to breast cancer by checking for mutations in two specific genes.

Myriad has a patent on this test. But some argue that this particular gene is a natural feature of the human body, one Myriad shouldn?t be able to patent. Then there?s the fact that Myriad?s patents allow it to charge high prices for its test, blocking out low-cost competitors that could otherwise help more people.

Of course, like I mentioned above, if Myriad couldn?t profit from its patents, it might never have made the discoveries in the first place.

In August, Myriad received a court decision from the Federal Circuit that, for the most part, declared Myriad?s patents valid. The court?s main reason was that ?isolated? DNA molecules don?t occur in nature.

Patent Case #2: Monsanto

Monsanto (NYSE: MON) is an agricultural science company that makes seeds for different crops, including genetically modified strains. The products are enormously popular. For example, Monsanto?s soybeans ? which are modified to be especially tolerant to pesticides ? accounted for 94% of the U.S. crop last year.*

Of course, when you plant a seed, you end up with more seeds. And saving and planting those the following year is how farmers have operated since the days of the Fertile Crescent.

The problem is, when you buy a Monsanto seed, you can?t plant the next generation of seeds without paying Monsanto.

One farmer, Vernon Hugh Bowman, is challenging that notion ? arguing for the right to use second-generation seeds without buying them from the company.

Obviously, this isn?t an open-and-shut case. There are levels of murky legal interpretations to consider. And to complicate matters more, Bowman wasn?t just buying Monsanto seeds. He was buying from a centralized grain elevator that happened to contain Monsanto seeds, along with others.

On the flip side, while some people don?t like the idea of genetically modified foods, Monsanto?s technologies have boosted agricultural yields significantly. It?s helped the industry grow to $13.5 billion in annual sales.

But can you really patent a living plant, not to mention its offspring?

The Supreme Court?s ruling will have obvious implications for the agricultural industry. But the ruling could also set important precedents that will reverberate throughout our economy.

For instance, it could affect a concept called ?patent exhaustion.? This determines whether a patent holder can maintain its rights over a technology after it?s been sold, or if its rights were exhausted by the sale.

The smart money is on Monsanto winning this case. That was the decision of the appeals court. The Obama administration supports the decision. And the current, business-friendly Supreme Court will likely go the same way.

On such merits, keeping an eye on dips in Monsanto shares ahead of the decision could generate some profits. But the longer-term effects on your portfolio ? and your life ? could be even greater.

Ahead of the tape,

Matthew Weinschenk

*We understand many people see Monsanto as an evil, corporate overlord out to destroy food. We don?t get into that here. We?re talking about the future of patents. So please, spare us your comments on Monsanto.

Grandparent Wannabees and Daughters' Fertility ? The Sisterhood ...

By Judy Bolton-Fasman

Thinkstock

I am not a grandmother ? yet! But my friends who are blessed with grandchildren tell me that grandparenthood is equal parts pure love and complete wonder. Some even tell me they wish they could have skipped parenting and gone straight to grandparenting. I can?t wait.

Or maybe I can.

According to an article published last May in The New York Times, eager grandparents are taking their daughters? fertility into their own hands by paying for egg freezing. In today?s world of reproductive technology, it?s never too early to harvest viable ovaries for the delicate, sometimes elusive eggs that represent potential grandchildren. As parents watch their single daughters get older, they worry that their children will age out of their reproductive years. Biological clocks are not simply ticking, they?re booming as loudly as Big Ben.

Before I get into the details, I should note that freezing your daughter?s eggs is not an extreme alternative for a particular kind of mother. Back in the day, when I was closing in on 30 without a single marriage prospect, I don?t doubt that my mother would have considered taking me to a fertility clinic for the sake of her own grandmotherhood. Truth be told, I love that I have a feasible option in case my daughter?s baby timeline is not exactly in synch with mine ? or biology?s. And if she?s on the other side of 35 without a partner, she can still be a mother if she so chooses.

Perhaps at this point I should mention I may be getting ahead of myself: My daughter is only 18.

In that same New York Times article, Rachel Lehmann-Haupt, a journalist and the author of ?In Her Own Sweet Time: Unexpected Adventures in Finding Love, Commitment and Motherhood,? calls the negotiations that happen when grandparents advocate for egg-freezing ?the post adult-birds and the-bees-talk.? It?s telling that the article does not mention that after years of romantic disappointments, Lehmann-Haupt decided to freeze her eggs at 35. As she recounts in her book, at $15,000 it was not a cheap choice, but for her, it was an essential alternative.

Lehman-Haupt came of age in the mid-90s, when another journalist, Sylvia Ann Hewlett, caused a stir with her book, ?Creating a Life: What Every Woman Needs to Know About Having a Baby and a Career.? Hewlett set 35 as a firm age by which to have a first baby. She may have had biology on her side (after 35 a pregnancy is routinely treated by physicians as high-risk), but her ideas couldn?t be reconciled with modern love and 21st-century life. Lehmann-Haupt saw Hewlett?s clarion call to start a family earlier as a hard proposition and was determined to draw ?a new roadmap of [women?s choices].?

Lehmann-Haupt?s decision to take charge of her fate and freeze her eggs is part of a growing social revolution chronicled on Web sites like RetrieveFreezeRelax.com, founded by Jennifer Hayes, and Brigitte Adams? Eggsurance.com. Hayes notes that most women ?are still under the impression that the process has a very low success rate. That was true five years ago. Not so anymore.? Eggsurance.com, the more impressive of the two sites for its depth of knowledge ? including step-by-step guidance for women who freeze their eggs ? has a tag line that sums up the goals of women who want to take explicit control of their fertility: ?For proactive women who want to ensure they have the option of having children ? just not now.?

For all the progress that reproductive technology has made in the last decade, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine still considers egg freezing experimental. But as the science continues to be refined the label is bound to change, and so too are the emotions attached to the process. What hasn?t changed is that a significant number of women want to become mothers ? and they will go to great lengths to make that happen. Egg freezing was still an unproven technology when Lehmann-Haupt was in her early 30s, but I predict it will eventually become the gold standard that frees women to become mothers regardless of their timing or relationship status.

I may be ready for grandchildren, but I am, in every permutation, pro-choice. If that includes my daughter bypassing motherhood for her career and her passions, then that?s her business. I just want to go on record as saying that I am available for babysitting when the time comes.
