The time has come for higher farm production, business leader says ...

Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic could increase exports on its 50 top farm products, but a higher production needs political will and clear rules, warned Dominican Agribusiness Board (JAD) executive vice-president Osmar Ben?tez Sunday.

He said the Government must establish export policies and orient producers in that direction. ?If we placed an interest and gave the farmers the necessary tools, in a short time we could increase export volumes in an appreciable part of the 50 main farm products the country exports.?

Among those products the business leader cited sugar cane, avocado, pineapple, chayote, eggplant, pigeon peas, orange? juice, yaut?a, mango, guava, dry coconuts, tobacco bagasse, ginger, bitter orange, ketchup and other sweet tomato sauces, cakes, sweet potato, cracked rice, non decaffeinate roasted coffee, molasses, natural tobacco, potatoes, butter, cacao fat and oil? , cane seasonings and rum.

Ben?tez also mentioned organic banana and cacao, exports in which the country leads worldwide, as well as canned kidney beans, fresh or refrigerated cucumbers or tomatoes and gherkins, vegetable juices and extracts, ornamental plants, fresh, vegetable oils, bananas, wines, mixtures? prepared and conserved fruits, cigarettes and nutritional preparations.

He added that the time has come to surmount the obstacles of larger countries place on smaller ones.
