N.M. archaeological sites reopened after wildfire

The prehistoric Native American archaeological sites that fill the heart of northern New Mexico's Bandelier National Monument reopened to visitors Monday, three months after the largest wildfire in the state's recorded history sent employees scrambling to save rare artifacts and irreplaceable artwork.

The monument's visitor center and biggest concentration of prehistoric cultural sites survived the fire and a second threat ? post-fire flooding that sent ash, sediment and charred debris into the heart of the monument.

With summer rains now all but over, monument employees on Monday welcomed shuttle buses of visitors back to the canyon.

"It's great to have people back in the park," said Rod Torrez, Bandelier's chief of interpretation, who was among the park officials there when the first bus pulled up. "I was expecting it to be quiet this first week, but people have been waiting a long time to get here."

The first bus arrived with 18 passengers, including Dan and Mary Lee of Traverse City, Mich.

The couple was in New Mexico celebrating their 50th anniversary and decided to extend their trip by a day to see the sites at Frijoles Canyon, including the kivas dug into the canyon floor as places to hold ceremonies, the stone pueblo walls that surround them, the wildflowers that have overtaken the area and the dwellings carved by the ancestors of modern Native Americans into the canyon walls.

"We're really lucky," said Mary Lee, who was ready for the short hike through the canyon with her backpack, hat and hiking poles. "This is the purpose of our trip, to visit prehistoric Indian sites."

Every bus after the first was filled to capacity with dozens of visitors waiting their turn for the next hike. The visitors came from California, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Florida and even Germany.

This marks one of the busiest times of year for Bandelier, which sees about 238,000 visitors annually. Parks officials said they wanted to open the canyon given that the upcoming annual balloon fiesta in Albuquerque is expected to draw thousands of tourists to the state.

Park Superintendent Jason Lott said he won't mind being busy.

"That's the business we're supposed to be in," he said. "It's resource management, and it's visitor experience. It's been closed for three months, and it's not healthy for the resource, it's not healthy for the staff, and it's not healthy for the visitors for us not to be doing this."

The buses will run seven days a week through October, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

By November, Lott said tourist season should be waning and the park plans to open the canyon so visitors can once again make the drive down the scenic canyon on their own. More trails are also expected to reopen later this fall.

Park officials said they have eagerly awaited the day visitors could once again enjoy what is undoubtedly the most popular area of the sprawling park.

Tucked into the ancient canyons of northern New Mexico, Bandelier has a long human history that stretches back more than 10,000 years. Aside from Native Americans, Spanish settlers and the Civilian Conservation Corps centuries later also left their mark on the area.

Nearly two-thirds of the monument was scorched during the Las Conchas fire, which was sparked on the afternoon of June 26 by a tree falling onto a power line miles away. The flames raced across mesa tops and down canyons dotted with hundreds of archaeological sites.

The monument's employees were left scrambling that afternoon to save pieces of prehistoric pottery, rare artifacts and the artwork of more modern-day Native Americans. They used blankets, old uniforms and even the American flag to wrap the pieces to be transported out of the canyon to safety.

The fire stopped a mile from the monument's largest concentration of prehistoric cultural sites. Also spared were a collection of historic buildings constructed by workers during the New Deal and the newly renovated $3.2 million visitor center ? all at the bottom of Frijoles Canyon.

The fire destroyed more than five dozen homes in the surrounding mountains and threatened one of the nation's premier nuclear weapons laboratories in Los Alamos. Since then, the whole region has been struggling to recover.

The threat over the past several weeks had been summer rains pounding down on the massive burn scar.

Thunderstorms in late August resulted in some flooding at Bandelier. Some of the concrete barriers and sandbags along Frijoles Creek near the visitor center were wiped out, as were parts of the Falls hiking trail farther downstream. Workers spent days removing debris along the creek.

No major damage to the visitor center was apparent aside from a muddy water line at the edge closest to the creek.

The archaeological sites, administration building and gift shop also escaped unscathed because they are on higher ground.

Still, questions remain about the long-term ecological impacts of the fire and its effects on the park. Visitors on Monday asked rangers stationed throughout the canyon questions about the fire, the flooding and the aftermath.

The 244-square-mile blaze reduced entire mountainsides and canyons to nothing but ash and blackened tree trunks. Thousands of fallen trees were vaporized.

All but 1,000 acres of the 12,000-acre upper Frijoles watershed burned and officials said most of the burning was severe, leaving no vegetation behind.

Since Bandelier will continue to be at the mercy of Mother Nature, park officials said they decided to limit visitor activity in the canyon to assure safety.

"I don't think we'll get back to normal for another two years, assuming we don't have any additional fires next summer," Lott said. "And monsoon season will continue to impact our operations and until the ecosystem and the landscape stabilizes, we're going to have to do things that are not normal to protect resources and visitors."

  • SmartPhone users are 2 times more likely to text than non-SmartPhone owners
  • Younger consumers are 2 time more likely to text (using either a regular cell phone or a SmartPhone) than older consumers.

Payday Loans ? Approval Guaranteed | Financial Crossing

If you have ever responded to an ad like this, you may have been ripped off at a much higher rate than you can imagine. Payday lenders are common sources of loans for unsuspecting individuals and families from low-income homes.

Most people that use payday loans are desperate for fast cash. Sometimes it is to fix a car or paying an overdue utility bill. The real tragedy is when a medical bill is paid from a payday loan.

For an upfront fee, you can borrow a couple hundred dollars for two weeks. A fee may not sound like much, but every 2 weeks, it can really add up. In fact payday loans frequently have interest rates exceeding 400% APR. Loan sharks actually offer lower rates.

The predatory nature of these loans has not gone unnoticed. Georgia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania took steps in 2005 and 2006 to kick out payday lenders. Many states in the northeast also ban high-interest payday loans. However, nearly all of central and western states allow these predatory loan products.

If you need a payday loan, try going to your bank or credit union. In fact, many credit unions offer payday loans at a more reasonable 14% APR. Almost anything is better than falling victim to a predatory payday loan.

Martha Stewart's Handmade Holiday Crafts Book - Living in the ...

Posted by Michelle Toglia

If you couldn't already tell, here at Martha Stewart we absolutely love the holidays. That's why we're so excited to announce that our Handmade Holiday Crafts book goes on sale today. Filled with 225 festive projects, this book will be your go-to guide to all things holiday. And, there are tons of creative projects that you can do with your little ones, including a goody bag-covered pumpkin for Halloween, fingerprint stamps for Valentine's Day, and glittered corn and squash for Thanksgiving.

Here's one of our favorite crafts to do with the kids from the brand-new book:

Patch O' Lanterns:
Take an ordinary paper lantern, dress it up with leaves, a stem, and tendrils, and it will assume a totally unexpected identity -- that of a pumpkin. A few craft supplies are all you need to transform the inexpensive globes.

What You'll Need:
Leaf template, scissors, pencil, green paper, white craft glue, pipe cleaners (in dark green and brown), marker, paper lantern, newspaper, brown floral tape, monofilament.

1. Print the leaf template to desired size; cut out. Trace onto green paper and cut out.

2. Glue a dark green pipe cleaner to the leaf's center. For the tendrils, spiral two brown pipe cleaners around a marker, then slide off. Attach leaf and tendrils to a lantern by winding the ends of pipe cleaners around the lantern's wire frame.

3. For the stem, roll a few sheets of newspaper into a tapered shape; cut off the wider end. Starting at the thinner end, wrap with brown floral tape.

4. To attach stem to lantern, continue to wrap brown floral tape around stem and wire frame. hang the lanterns with monofilament.

Growing Up on NFL Violence in a Violent Neighborhood

Posted Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011, at 11:44 AM ET

This NFL roundtable is a seasonlong partnership between Slate and Deadspin. Check back here each week as a rotating cast of football watchers discusses the weekend's key plays, coaching decisions, and traumatic brain injuries. And

Fred Jackson. Click image to expand.Of course Tommy's point about "flagrant" hits, and about shifting blame from the game to the players, is worth considering especially in light of Goodell's attempt to extend the season to 18 games. In addition to the astute observation that penalties take the burden off the stewards of the game and place it upon the shoulders of the players, there's the fact that so much about the league's alleged moves toward player safety reveal a sport almost at war with itself. There was a hit very early in the Patriots-Bills game where Ryan Fitzpatrick basically was grazed by a rusher's helmet. Grazed is perhaps too weak of a word, but it was anything but "flagrant"?the sort of penalty wherein you feel like the player is being taxed for his inability to exercise total control over the fiber of his being. This is an old problem?football teaches players to be aggressive, but not so aggressive as to be "dirty." Now it's not so aggressive as to involuntarily butt heads with another player.

I'm obviously not making light of the problem?it's very real. In fact, like a lot of fans who've been turning over this issue, I wonder if it's actually an existential problem?something that can't really be fixed by "proper tackling" and high-tech helmets. Football is violent. That's a large part of why we watch. It feels wrong saying that?but, as a kid, the violence was always part of what attracted me. I remember when Steve Atwater reversed the Nigerian Nightmare. This was not merely a hit, but a moment that rose to myth among my friends.

Kenny Easley, Joey Browner, and, of course, Ronnie Lott?these were our gods. We loved seeing Atwater lay out Okoye, in the same way we loved Tyson destroying fools before we could really get comfortable on mom's couch. The violence spoke to something about our lives, about how we wanted to go through the world, about how we saw ourselves in our most absurd fantasy. It also reflected something very real. Our world was violent, and learning to negotiate it was just something we did. Atwater seemed to not just negotiate it, but to conquer it, to wield it with a total lack of fear. There's a danger of making this a race/class thing. I don't want to do that, because I strongly suspect that plenty of white males, across the class spectrum, know exactly what I mean.

Even now, I think of Ray Lewis and Eddie George going at it in 2001 in the AFC divisional playoff, and I know that Lewis might not be able to walk when he turns 50, and I have no idea what all those years of punishment did to George, but still I get charged.

As for that Bills game, the night before, a buddy of mine who's a Buffalo fan said to me, "You give my Bills any shot?" My response was predictable: "Nope." That game was bizarre. Even with all the interceptions, I thought Brady would find a way out. Look, there's a lot to like about Buffalo. Most of it is named Fred Jackson. But I'm so used to seeing Brady do these magic acts and win the games that he doesn't really deserve. I guess the Bills were used to it, too. Watching them run down the clock, I thought of the Saints in the Super Bowl against the Colts. If you can't beat the other team's dominant player, by God, keep him off the field.

I tried to watch the Panthers vs. Jaguars. Didn't make it past the first half. Just ugly?though I'm in love with Cam Newton's arm.

Fusion Garage?s Grid 4 smartphone receives the FCC treatment

Grid4

Just in case you thought the folks from Fusion Garage weren't serious about their whole "Grid" line of the devices, we now have a blatant reminder that they are indeed pushing forth with the idea. The Grid4 smartphone is now in the hands of the FCC, which has given the device a complete tear down.

As a reminder -- this device, when released will be coming with a Qualcomm MSM8255, 4-inch 800 x 480 LCD display, 5 Megapixel camera with Autofocus and LED Flash (720p Video Recording) and 16GB of internal storage.

Also included in the FCC filing is the user manual but it is rather sparse on details and more so full of legal speak stating things such as "This product uses the Flickr API but is not endorsed or certified by Flickr" -- sounds great. You can hit the source link for the nitty gritty, if you dare.

Cabinet Re-Facing Offering A Quick Pick-Me-Up For Your Kitchen ...

Probably the number one room where the remodeling can add tremendous value to your property is the kitchen and it?s also one of the most popular rooms in the home. With house flippers, a large portion of their budget will be focused on the kitchen because it is the biggest draw for house shoppers. Your kitchen may be in need of a face lift but what if you don?t have the major budget of a seasoned house flipper? A strong first impression is what you will get if you simply re-face your kitchen cabinets.

Essentially this requires a redo of the front faces of the cabinets and the hardware. This includes the doors, drawer fronts, cabinet handles and the cabinet body fronts.

One of the most common methods is to repaint all cabinet surfaces and doors and it?s probably the cheapest as well. Usually, you can accomplish the entire job in 2 or 3 days which means that this process doesn?t have to be time consuming. It is advised that you do all the door and drawer painting outside or in a well ventilated are of your home because it does make a bit of a mess. You will paint the cabinet body fronts from where they stand so you need to put up plastic sheeting over the doorways so that excess paint and fumes will be prevented from leaking into other rooms of your house.

The other most popular method is to replace all the drawers, hardware, and doors while the cabinet bodies are left in place to be either refinished or painted. Not only will you be allowed with the fun and freedom of shopping for new cabinet doors, but this method will also save you a lot of money over the price of entirely new cabinet doors.

Cabinet refacing also allows you a lot of creative freedom. Cutting the middle section of cabinet doors and replacing them with all sorts of materials such as shiny objects between panes of glass, punched copper, or even dried food materials in colorful arrangements is what crafty individuals would often do. Providing a more open space visually is simply using glass insets but you need to be sure that you are on the neat side as visitors will see the entire contents of your cabinets.

Before starting your cabinet refacing project check out various kitchen remodeling photos on the internet and in your local home improvement stores. They will have hundreds of great ideas to suit any budget. Most importantly, enjoy the pick-me-up and have fun.

Turn to Father and Son when you need vinyl replacement windows Philadelphia Pennsylvania or front doors Philadelphia Pennsylvania.

Google And Monopoly Theater

Al FrankenAs I watched the Google antitrust hearings last Wednesday, with its gotcha moments and Senators pontificating about the dangers Google poses to society, it struck me that what I was watching was theater. And not just any theater, but monopoly theater. I am borrowing from the concept of security theater: "a term that describes security countermeasures intended to provide the feeling of improved security while doing little or nothing to actually improve security." In the same way, talking about Google's monopoly power and what the government should do about it provides the feeling of improving competition while doing little or nothing to actually improve it. The hearing touched upon many serious concerns about Google's market power, but in the end it was just monopoly theater. Nothing antitrust regulators do to Google will actually improve competition.

What You Need To Consider For Cycling In Europe

The thought of cycling around the wonderful countries of Europe is something that many people are beginning to discover the joy of. Whilst many are content to jump on a plane, train or bus there is nothing that can compare to taking to your own two wheels throughout Europe. Cycling in Europe is very easy to do as they are much more accustomed to having cyclists sharing their pathways and roads, unlike other parts of the world.

Traveling around by bike is a great activity that can be done of anyone of any age, so it is an ideal choice for families, couples or single travelers. To start with, you will need to purchase or rent a reliable bicycle, ensuring that it will survive the rigors of the trip. Once you have sorted everyone out with a bicycle, it is then time to decide where it is in Europe that you want to go.

Europe has the advantage of containing a multitude of terrains making it perfect for the beginner right up to the professional cyclist. If you are wary about throwing yourself in at the deep-end, then your first trip could be somewhere like the Netherlands which is flat all the way and ideal for getting to grips with a cycling tour. If you are an old hand and like a bit of a challenge then the likes of Spain and Italy are perfect as they have plenty of hilly, mountainous terrain to conquer.

Whilst there are many great places to cycle for beginners you should also do your research to find out some areas and countries that are not suitable and should be avoided. The likes of the city of Prague are full of cobbled streets which are tricky to navigate, for example, and Venice does not allow bicycle riding at all. You should also take into account how long your trip is going to last and choose a country or city which will allow you to take in the surroundings at a leisurely pace without having to cram it all in.

Once you have planned where it is in Europe that you want to go, you will then need to ensure that it is relatively straightforward to get there. You may need to take a ferry, plane, train or bus to a starting point and you also want to make sure that the transport systems in your chosen country or city are up to scratch for those short hop-on, hop-off moments. In particular Germany is noted for its wonderful cycling-friendly transport network and has plenty of routes for travelers to use.

It is also important to consider how you are going to spend the nights during your cycling in Europe tour. You may be content to use campsites, packing a small tent into your kit, but there are plenty of other options available. There are guest houses, bed & breakfasts and some arranged cycling tours also incorporate stays in hotels on a ?wellness break?.

One of the biggest mistakes that newbie cyclists make is packing far too much before they set off. It is prudent to bear in mind that you have to carry all the items on your two wheels and so packing the essentials is all that is needed. Any forgotten important items can be picked up en-route if necessary.

If you are unsure about setting off on a bicycle into the wide world that is Europe on your own the very first time, then it is worth considering doing an arranged tour. You will find many various tours available and they can easily be researched and booked on the internet.

Eric Simmons is a cycling enthusiast who helps others find out about how to take a Italy bike tour. Take a look at his web-site at http://www.italybiketours.net/index.html for more information about Italy bike tours.

Accident at work and the legal process | AM Personal Injury

Accident at work and the legal process

Article by ashley gilmour

If you have been injured in an accident at work or working elsewhere you may have an Accident Compensation Claim against a group or individual responsible, including your employer. Employers are required by law to have Employer Liability Insurance and the insurance company will deal with your Accident Compensation Claim for injury and losses, including loss of earnings. Even if your accident hasn?t caused you to take time off work, you can still claim compensation for the physical pain and suffering of your injury. Accidents at work can happen in various ways and even if you think no-one was necessarily to blame, you may have a Accident Compensation Claim, involving defective equipment or machinery, inadequate training in the use of machinery, lifting heavy objects, using dangerous machinery, faulty, damaged or slippery flooring, careless acts by other workers causing an accident, lack of safety clothing for example. In English Law, you must commence Court proceedings to claim damages for personal injury and consequential loss within three years of the date of your accident. (If you are under 18, the three year deadline runs from your 18th birthday. It therefore expires on your 21st birthday.) We will carefully note the limitation date in our firm?s records, both in your file and on our computer, but we ask that you too make careful note of this important date in your own records. In order to bring a compensation claim for your injuries you must prove that some person or organisation other than yourself is fully or partially liable for your injuries. To succeed in your claim, you must prove fault by a third party. To prove fault we will allege negligence and/or breach of statutory duty by the Defendant. To prove negligence you will have to show that not only was the Defendant in breach of a duty of care owed to you, but also that the breach has caused foreseeable damage to you. To prove breach of statutory duty, reference will be made to the specific duties laid down in Acts of Parliament that may apply to the circumstances of your case.An accident compensation claimwill fail if a Claimant is unable to prove liability on the part of the Defendant. The burden of proof rests upon you to show that the Defendant was negligent and/or in breach of statutory duty and caused injury to you on a balance of probabilities. In other words you must show that it is more likely than not that the Defendant is liable and has caused you damage.

If you can prove fault on the part of the Defendant, the next stage of your case involves assessing the value of your claim. Lawyers call this ?quantum?.In legal terms compensation is called ?damages.? Damages fall into two camps. The first type of damage is called general damages. General damages represent accident compensation for the pain and suffering and loss of amenity suffered by you. General damages can only be assessed when the relevant medical report is obtained.

The second type of damage is called special damages. This head of damage is more scientific in its calculation. In essence, special damage relates to out of pocket expenses such as travel expenses, damage to belongings and loss of earnings. This list is not exhaustive. As you are the Claimant in this case, it is for you to dictate the pace of your litigation. It is not for the Defendant to do so. We advise that negotiations be opened with the Defendant?s insurers to see if liability can be admitted at an early stage. We would then prepare full details of your claim (both general and special damage) and provide them to the Defendant?s insurers with a view to negotiating a settlement.

We will investigate your case as follows:-a) Write a letter of claim to the Defendant and correspond with the Defendant?s Insurers once appointed by the Defendant on the issue of liability. The Defendant?s insurers are under an obligation to make enquiries and confirm within 3 months that they admit liability or that they will provide a detailed response as to why liability is denied.b) Obtain witness statements when and where appropriate.c) Obtain out of pocket expenses information when and where appropriate.Once the above steps have been completed, we will review your case plan. In any event, we will update on progress at regular intervals throughout the duration of your case. Please remember that although you are entitled to recover losses you have been put to as a result of the accident, you are under a duty to mitigate those losses i.e.; you must, where reasonably practical, keep those losses to a minimum. Losses not mitigated may not be recovered. Please ensure that you keep receipts for any losses you are put to as a result of the accident. We will need these in due course to prove those losses claimed in your accident claim process.

(AP) ? Nearly two decades after embarking on historic peace talks with Israel, Palestinians prepared to sidestep that troubled route on Friday to seek U.N. recognition of an independent state ? hoping to leverage this dramatic move on the world stage to realize their dream of an independent homeland.

Earlier in the week, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas rebuffed an intense, U.S.-led effort to sway him from the statehood bid, saying he would submit the application to U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon as planned. A top aide, Mohammed Ishtayeh, said Thursday that Abbas asked Ban and the Council's Lebanese president this month to process the application without delay.

"We're going without any hesitation and continuing despite all the pressures," Abbas told members of the Palestinian diaspora at a hotel in New York on Thursday night. "We seek to achieve our right and we want our independent state."

To be sure, Abbas' appeal to the U.N. to recognize Palestinian independence in the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza Strip would not deliver any immediate changes on the ground: Israel would remain an occupying force in those first two territories and continue to severely restrict access to Gaza, ruled by Palestinian Hamas militants.

Beyond that, Security Council action on the membership request could take weeks or months.

The strategy also put the Palestinians in direct confrontation with the U.S., which has threatened to veto their membership bid in the U.N. Security Council, reasoning, like Israel, that statehood can only be achieved through direct negotiations between the parties to the long and bloody conflict.

Also hanging heavy in the air was the threat of renewed violence over frustrated Palestinian aspirations ? perhaps not immediate, because Abbas has vowed to prevent unrest, but possibly down the road if negotiations continue to stall.

Yet by seeking approval at a world forum overwhelmingly sympathetic to their quest, Palestinians hope to make it harder for Israel to resist already heavy global pressure to negotiate the borders of a future Palestine based on lines Israel held before capturing the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza in 1967.

In recent weeks, international mediators have been furiously trying to piece together a formula that would let the Palestinians abandon their plan to ask the Security Council for full U.N. membership, and instead make do with the more modest goal of asking a sympathetic General Assembly to elevate their status from permanent observer to nonmember observer state. The other part of that formula would include the resumption of negotiations in short order.

The U.S. and Israel have been pressuring council members to either vote against the plan or abstain when it comes up for a vote. The vote would require the support of nine of the council's 15 members to pass, but even if the Palestinians could line up that backing, a U.S. veto is assured.

The resumption of talks seems an elusive goal, with both sides digging in to positions that have tripped up negotiations for years. Israel insists that negotiations go ahead without any preconditions. But Palestinians say they will not return to the bargaining table without assurances that Israel would halt settlement building and drop its opposition to basing negotiations on the borders it held before capturing the West Bank, east Jerusalem and the Gaza in 1967.

Israel has warned that the Palestinian appeal to the U.N. will have a disastrous effect on negotiations, which have been the cornerstone of international Mideast policy for the past two decades. Netanyahu, who is to address the General Assembly later Friday, shortly after Abbas makes his own address, opposes negotiations based on 1967 lines, saying a return to those frontiers would expose Israel's heartland to rocket fire from the West Bank.

He also fears that if that principle becomes the baseline for negotiations, then Palestinians won't settle for anything less, despite previous understandings between the Palesitnians and previous Israeli governments to swap land where settlement blocs stand for Israeli territory.

Talks for all intents and purposes broke down nearly three years ago after Israel went to war in the Gaza Strip and prepared to hold national elections that ultimately propelled Netanyahu to power for a second time. A last round was launched a year ago, with the ambitious aim of producing a framework accord for a peace deal, but broke down just three weeks later after an Israeli settlement construction slowdown expired.

Palestinians say they turned to the U.N. in desperation over 18 failed years of peace talks. But Israelis say the Palestinians are to blame for their own predicament and accuse them of going to the United Nations precisely to avoid talks.

When people think of crafting, they think of craft fairs in small towns, of mothers and grandmothers manning booths with hand-sewn clothing for American Girl dolls and beeswax candles and hand-knitted mittens and hats ? and they?re not totally wrong. But these days, everyone is crafting.

Thanks to the proliferation of ?do it yourself? blogs on the internet and online interior design magazines, crafting is bigger than ever. It?s become something that?s no longer reserved for grandmothers who spend their days sewing quilts while they watch episode after episode of General Hospital. In fact, many young people have taken up crafting, having figured out that making great gifts and things for your home is so much easier and better than buying them.

This year, instead of gifting store-bought gifts, consider making things on your own. When you?ve crafted something that you give your friend or your family member, it?s made with love. You?ve put time and effort into it, and that often means much more to someone than something you bought at the local mall. Luckily, you can get all the craft supplies you need online! Here are some must-haves for your next creation.

One of the best things to have around is lots and lots of buttons ? you never know when you?re going to need them for your next project! Let?s say you?re helping the kids make sock puppets ? those puppets need eyes, don?t they? Grab some buttons! Perhaps you?re sewing new buttons onto your favorite jacket; perhaps the snowman out in the front yard could really benefit from the ability to see through his button eyes.

Buttons are great, because children understand what they are and, for the most part, not to ingest them. They?re easy to use as well, as glue guns can work some magic with a button ? you don?t even need a sewing needle! You never know when you?re going to need buttons or any other form of embellishment, so it?s smart to stock up on them now. That way, next time you?re making a quilt that requires button detailing, or doing some at home puppet making, you?ll be all set with everything you need.

Online craft stores have everything from Christmas buttons to Football-themed buttons, assorted all natural colored buttons to Halloween buttons featuring the wicked witch of the west! Candy corn buttons are great for Halloween decorations and costumes, while mini stocking buttons can help dress up a Christmas ornament or outfit. Buttons are the best form of embellishment out there ? easy to use and with great impact, these are something you can?t have enough of!

Another great thing to have in your craft closet is cookie cutters. Most moms have cookie cutters galore, but did you know that you can also use cookie cutters for crafting, not baking? Sure, you?ll use them at Halloween, and again at Christmas, and again at Valentine?s Day and on Easter Sunday ? but why not use them to help the kids learn their shapes? They can trace around the cookie cutters, even use them to create made at home Christmas ornaments to hang on the tree. Bone-shaped cookie cutters can be used to make treats for your furry friends, and any fun shape can be used as either the basis of an ornament for your tree or an ornament itself ? simply add some paint and glitter! Many people think that cookie cutters are limited to baking only, but that simply isn?t the case. There?s lots you can do with cookie cutters ? the fun doesn?t have to stop!

Another craft tool that you?ll never be able to get enough of is glitter. Kids love glitter, and for good reason: This sparkly substance is a whole lot of fun. Whether you?re customizing ornaments for the tree or putting some glitter onto your child?s latest paint creation, you?ll be hard-pressed to find a crafting situation that isn?t made better by glitter. If you?ve got a certain color that you know you or your children love, or that you use a lot, consider buying it in bulk. If not, get a value pack with a little bit of each color, so that you can experiment and have a rainbow of glittery options at your command.

Yet another great option is beading and jewelry making supplies. You?d be surprised at how easy it is to make your own jewelry, especially once you get the hang of using pliers to bend and twist the metal in the direction you need it to go.

Whether you?re making necklaces or earrings, pins or bracelets, stock your craft supply box with bits and bobs of everything so that whenever the inspiration strikes, you?ll have everything ready. And don?t be surprised if your little hobby takes off and turns into a side business.

Beeswax

Beeswax

$25.46

In this typically low-key comedy drama from independent writer/director Andrew Bujalski, Jeannie (Tilly Hatcher) and Lauren (Maggie Hatcher) are a pair of twin sisters living in Austin, TX, who are close without having much in common. Jeannie, who is confined to a wheelchair, runs a well-established vintage clothing store called Storyville with her longtime friend Amanda (Anne Dodge), while Lauren drifts from job to job and is pondering an offer to teach English in Kenya. Jeannie and Amanda have had a falling out and Jeannie is worried about her stake in the business, especially since the original partnership agreements were drawn up by Amanda?s father. When Amanda suggests she may take legal action to take full control of Storyville, Jeannie decides she needs legal advice and turns to Merrill (Alex Karpovsky), a former boyfriend who has almost completed his law degree. Merrill is feeling frazzled as he tries to pass the bar exam and he welcomes the distraction, but it isn?t long before he forgets one of the first rules of legal ethics and begins sleeping with Jeannie. Lauren, meanwhile, wants to be of assistance to her sister, but she gets roped into helping her mother with her myriad problems while trying to make sense of her own future. Beeswax was an official selection at the 2009 South by Southwest Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
