Liam Hemsworth, Dwayne Johnson Get In An 'Empire State' Of Mind

Liam Hemsworth is a bona fide action star, as unlikely as that sounds. After coming to attention as Miley Cyrus's beau in "The Last Song," the Aussie's taken his turn in upcoming beefy blockbusters like "The Hunger Games" and "The Expendables 2." Now, the push continues, as he's about to hit a Rock.
Deadline reports that [...]

File sharing group seen as religious in Sweden (AP)

STOCKHOLM ? A file-sharing group that considers itself a spiritual organization said Thursday that Sweden has recognized it as a religious community.

According to documents provided by spiritual leader Isak Gerson, 20, his Church of Kopimism received that approval in late December. The public authority responsible for such decisions was closed for the day and couldn't be reached to confirm the approval, which comes amid a global crackdown on file-sharing websites often used to illegally download movies, TV shows and music.

Gerson said in an interview that some of the church's roughly 3,000 members meet every week to share files of music, films and other content they consider holy and regard copying as a sacrament. He said the church's philosophy opposes copyrights in all forms and encourages piracy of all types of media, including music, movies, TV shows, and software.

The recognition of the Church of Kopimism follows a fierce debate in Sweden about illegal file-sharing over the Internet of copyright-protected films and music. This Nordic country ? home to the men behind the file-sharing hub The Pirate Bay ? already has a political party called The Pirate Party that seeks to reform copyright laws and holds a seat in the European Parliament.

Gerson, a philosophy student, has also been involved in the Pirate Party's youth organization.

Sweden's government defines religious communities as ones that conduct religious activities and services, entitling them to file separate applications for state funding and the right to marry couples. The country also has recognized believers of Norse paganism, elves and gnomes as religious communities.

Gerson said the Church of Kopimism feels strengthened by the government's recognition but that he doesn't think it can stop the law from charging members for illegal file-sharing.

"Being recognized by the state of Sweden is a large step for all of Kopimi. Hopefully, this is one step toward the day when we can live out our faith without fear of persecution," he said.

The group said it had sent in three applications to the Kammarkollegiet agency to gain approval as a religious community because the agency had been "strict with formalities."

"I think it might have something to do with the governmental organizations abiding by a very copyright friendly attitude, with a twisted view on copying," said Gustav Nipe, the chairman of the Church of Kopimism's board.

Argentina's Fernandez recovering well after surgery (Reuters)

PILAR, Argentina (Reuters) ? Argentina's popular president, Cristina Fernandez, is recovering well after undergoing surgery for thyroid cancer on Wednesday, setting the stage for her return to work later this month.

Fernandez's papillary carcinoma was detected during a routine medical checkup just before Christmas and there was no sign the disease had spread, government officials said.

The cancer diagnosis came just months after the center-left leader easily won a second four-year term in office. Doctors have said the 58-year-old president has a better than 90 percent chance of recovery.

"The surgery on President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner was carried out without any complication," presidential spokesman Alfredo Scoccimarro told reporters, adding that she will remain hospitalized for about 72 hours.

A few hundred supporters cheered upon hearing the news, some of them holding signs reading "Strength Cristina." They were gathered outside the Austral Hospital in the city of Pilar, some 28 miles north of the capital Buenos Aires.

Fernandez's already high approval ratings could get an extra lift from public sympathy over her illness as they did following the death late in 2010 of her husband and predecessor as president, Nestor Kirchner.

The news of her ailment shook a country where Eva Peron, the wife of legendary leader Juan Peron, has been revered for decades after dying of cancer at the age of 33. Like "Evita," Fernandez is loved by some for her efforts to help the poor.

"We were all worried about how she was doing. She's a great help to all of us ... and luckily everything went well. Now we have to wait for her to recover and forge ahead," said Irma Acosta, a 60-year-old worker.

Doctors removed the president's thyroid gland during an operation that lasted some 3-1/2 hours.

"That is the appropriate procedure," said Oscar Levalle, chief of endocrinology at Hospital Durand in Buenos Aires. "This is a relatively common pathology and has a very good prognosis ... she should recover well."

Vice President Amado Boudou, the former economy minister and a loyal Fernandez aide, assumed the presidency during Fernandez's scheduled 20-day leave of absence.

Widely popular among Argentines who benefit from her generous welfare spending, the president often gets bad marks from business leaders and Wall Street who say her interventions in the economy frighten off investment.

She is the latest of several left-leaning Latin American leaders to have cancer. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who underwent chemotherapy last year, speculated after the Fernandez diagnosis that the U.S. "empire" may have developed a way to give the illness to its political rivals.

Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo's lymphatic cancer is in remission and former Brazilian leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is being successfully treated for a tumor on his larynx.

Fernandez is a talented orator fond of glamorous clothes, high heels and make-up. She still wears black to mourn Kirchner.

Many thought his death spelled the end of the couple's idiosyncratic blend of state intervention, nationalist rhetoric and championing of human rights. But Fernandez won re-election in a landslide in October, helped by brisk economic growth fueled in part by hefty grain export revenues.

For Undecided Iowa Caucus Voters, It's About Jobs

'I want somebody who can do more than just speak the rhetoric,' Iowan tells MTV News, as poll finds 41 percent still selecting a candidate.

URBANDALE, IOWA — You've heard a lot about the 99 percent, but not nearly as much about the 41 percent. That's the amount of voters Monday's (January 2) final polling found had still not made up their minds about who they are going to vote for in the Iowa caucus on Tuesday night.

"Iowans uniquely have a chance to go out and meet the candidates, and listen to them talk. ... Each candidate has had a chance to be at the top of the polls, but none of the polls represent the 100,000 or so Iowans that will vote tomorrow night," Jeremy Danilson said about the multiple opportunities voters in his state have to get face time with candidates in the first-in-the-nation primary. "I think everyone's taking their time, wants to make the best choice that they can."

Danilson, 28, has lived in Iowa most of his life, but is participating in his first caucus Tuesday after becoming more engaged in politics during his final two years in law school. Like a lot of young voters in Iowa, he's taking the plunge after being inspired by real-life issues that are affecting his life now that he's out of school.

"I'm personally leaning towards Newt Gingrich right now," said Danilson, who has attended two debates in Iowa and met a number of candidates face-to-face more than once, including Rep. Michele Bachmann, former Senator Rick Santorum, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, Rep. Ron Paul, Texas Governor Rick Perry, as well as Gingrich, with whom he's had two intimate, sit-down meetings in a small student group. "I feel like he actually understands where we are historically and where we need to go and uniquely has the ability to implement the change he's talking about."

Danilson's wife, Sara, 23, a waitress at the suburban OverTime sports bar, just finished her undergraduate degree and is actively looking for a full-time job as well. She said she got wrapped up in caucus fever because of Jeremy, but unlike her husband, with just over 24 hours to go, she had not yet decided which candidate is getting her vote.

"This is probably the first time I've really paid attention to what's going on as far as politics," she said of why the 2012 caucus has grabbed her attention. "I'm purely basing my decision off of the caucuses. I don't have a set candidate. There's nobody I'm really impressed with at this time.

"I'm excited to hear what people are going to say," she continued. "It's not going to be people working for the campaign. It's going to be real people, real Iowans, expressing how they feel about the candidates."

For Sara, who graduated in April with a B.A. in business administration, issue #1 is jobs. Specifically, what the GOP candidates will do to help her find one. "I've been applying to about everything," she said. "At first, I was kind of picky, and then I was just, 'Click, apply, click, apply,' because I can't find anything."

The couple both have student loans to start paying back soon, and they're looking for a candidate who will address the job situation and give them hope for paying off a mountain of debt that could easily overwhelm them if they can't find employment soon.

"Jobs is huge," said Jeremy, who is studying for his bar exam and working hard to find a job before he must start making loan payments in April. "I initially thought an undergrad degree would guarantee me a job. That's not the case, as Sara's struggling with that. Law school doesn't guarantee you a job either."

The time for stump speeches is over as far as Sara is concerned, and her night-of decision at a local high school auditorium will come down to the closing arguments from her friends and neighbors about the candidate they think can lead the country.

"The other thing is: I want somebody who can do more than just speak the rhetoric," Jeremy added about the nasty rhetoric that has filled the air, along with copious attack ads, in Iowa. "I need to believe that the candidate can actually accomplish what they're talking about."

Sara said she liked the tax plans for both Gingrich and Romney after doing research on the candidates' websites, while Jeremy said balancing the federal budget was another huge issue for him.

"Sara and I, we can only spend the money that we make," he said. "Why doesn't the [federal] government have to do that also? When I do get a job, I don't want to pay half my income in taxes."

Fecha:? 30/12/2011? Fuente:? GSMspain

Man pleads guilty in bomb attempt near Columbine (Reuters)

DENVER (Reuters) ? A convicted bank robber accused of trying to set off a bomb at a shopping mall near Columbine High School on the 12th anniversary of the shooting rampage there pleaded guilty on Friday to a federal charge.

Earl Moore, a 65-year-old convicted bank robber who was released from prison just a week before the April 20 incident, faces a minimum 30-year prison term when he is sentenced in March.

Moore pleaded guilty during a hearing in U.S. District Court in Denver to a single count of using a destructive device during a crime of violence.

"I didn't have any intention of hurting anybody, your honor," Moore told Senior U.S. District Judge John Kane. "I guess I was just upset. It was a domestic thing. It doesn't make any sense."

Moore's defense attorney and prosecutors agreed that his action had nothing to do with the anniversary of the 1999 Columbine massacre.

The device, which was connected to two small propane canisters, was placed at Southwest Plaza but did not explode although it did cause minor fire damage in a service corridor.

There were no injuries, but the incident forced authorities to evacuate the mall and stirred alarm on the anniversary of the Columbine shooting rampage.

Two Columbine students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, fatally shot 12 classmates and a teacher before killing themselves on April 20, 1999, also using makeshift bombs made from propane tanks.

Moore was "sleeping in the woods" without a job or place to live when he slipped into a back door of Southwest Plaza mall with the explosive materials, his attorney, Assistant Federal Public Defender Robert Pepin, told reporters.

Pepin said his client wanted him to tell reporters he regrets his actions and "deeply regrets any impact" they had on people traumatized by the massacre 12 years earlier. He said Moore did not realize he placed the bomb on the anniversary.

Kane, who said that Moore faced "essentially a life sentence" because of his age, told attorneys for both sides he would consider ordering a mental evaluation of the defendant.

Prosecutors agreed to drop a charge of arson in exchange for Moore's guilty plea. Moore had been released from federal prison on April 13 after serving time for the 2005 robbery of a West Virginia bank.

Earth-like planets: How will we know if they can sustain life? (VIDEO)

The Kepler spacecraft has made two landmark discoveries of Earth-like planets this month. But determining whether such planets can sustain life would require years of additional study.?

What makes for a potentially livable planet? That question moved center stage this month as NASA's Kepler mission passed two milestones.

On Tuesday, the Kepler team announced the discovery of two truly Earth-size planets orbiting another star ? but too close to the star for life to emerge. This followed an announcement on Dec. 5 that the Kepler team had found a planet?in the host star's habitable zone, but?2.4?times larger that Earth.

The findings move the Kepler team closer to its goal of finding other planets like ours. The spacecraft is searching 150,000 stars to see how many are like the sun and have planets roughly the same size and distance away as Earth.

But researchers caution that even when Kepler eventually scores a direct hit, that will not be the end of the story. Astronomers will have to answer many more questions about such planets before they can suggest that any of them may be Earth-like, let alone livable for some form of life.

According to Yale University astronomer Debra Fischer, three important pieces of this habitability puzzle begin with: a planet's distance from its sun, its mass, and the shape of its orbit.

Watch video aboot the newly discovered habitable planet Kepler-22b?here:

Other traits come into play, but "if we can find 100 planets that meet the three conditions, we will have have gone a long ways in our search for life," she writes in an e-mail exchange.

Distance is most straightforward for Kepler to gauge.?The distance from the sun to the Earth is about 93 million miles, or 1 Astronomical Unit (AU). By some estimates, the habitable zone around a sun-like star ??where with a little help from an atmosphere, water can exist on the surface as solid, liquid, and gas ? is between 0.95 and 1.37 AU.

The planet announced Dec. 5, Kepler 22b, is almost exactly 1 AU from its star.?But its mass has yet to be confidently established.

Mass is important, because if a planet is a lightweight, with less than about half Earth's mass, it won't have enough gravity to retain much of an atmosphere. Mars, at 10 percent of Earth's mass, has had much of its atmosphere stripped away.

"Too big is harder to quantify," Dr. Fischer adds.

If a planet has only a few times Earth's mass, it might still be potentially habitable. But if a planet becomes too massive, its gravity could be too strong, meaning that it builds a thick, deep atmosphere, resulting in crushing atmospheric pressures on the surface.?

For Kepler 22b, the best the Kepler team can do at the moment is give an upper limit to the mass ? 124 times Earth's mass.?The reason: Kepler's technique for pinpointing planets. It does this by gauging how they?briefly dim the light of their host star when they pass in front of it.

While the team can make some rough estimates about a planet's mass from this technique, the best information on mass, as well as the shape of the orbit,?comes from a different technique used by ground-based astronomers. This approach measures the wobble the planet imposes on host star's spectrum as it orbits.?

Knowing the planet's mass and its volume, researchers can also estimate its density, and so glean something about the planet's general composition by comparing its density with that of water. If the density is relatively small, it could be more gaseous, like a mini-Neptune. If the density is larger, it could suggest a denser, rocky planet.?

Casey Anthony allowed to keep mum in lawsuits during appeal (Reuters)

ORLANDO, Fla (Reuters) ? Casey Anthony can refuse to answer questions about the 2008 death of her 2-year-old daughter Caylee while she appeals her convictions related to the child's passing, a Florida judge has ruled.

Anthony, 25, was found not guilty in July of killing Caylee, but is appealing convictions on four charges of lying to detectives in the case.

One of the convictions was for falsely claiming that Caylee was kidnapped by a nanny named Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzalez.

A woman named Zenaida Gonzalez has sued Casey Anthony for defamation. In October, Anthony asserted her constitutional right to remain silent and avoid incriminating herself when she was questioned about the death under oath by lawyers in the suit.

Gonzalez's lawyers then asked Judge Lisa Munyon to order Anthony to talk. But Munyon denied their request in a ruling issued on Thursday.

"Federal and state courts have long recognized that the fifth amendment privilege may be properly asserted during the pendency of the direct appeal," Munyon wrote in her order.

The judge said that constitutional right applied in Anthony's case. The issue can be reconsidered after Anthony's appeal concludes, the judge wrote.

Gonzalez's lawyer could not be reached immediately for comment.

Anthony, who is living in an undisclosed location and serving a year of probation on check fraud charges, faces several lawsuits stemming from her daughter's disappearance and death.

Texas EquuSearch sued for damages to recoup money spent during a five-month search for Caylee. Former meter reader Roy Kronk, who found Caylee's remains in woods near the Anthony family's Orlando-area home, claimed in a suit this month that Anthony's lawyers defamed him by trying to raise suspicions about his involvement in the toddler's death.

Amobi Okoye, Rookie Who Became Youngest Player In United States’ NCAA, NFL•Turned Down Harvard University’s Offer For Football

|?Print?|?E-mail

ShareAmobi Okoye is a Nigerian Psychology graduate of the University of Louisville, United States, who is today, a top defensive player in the United States? National Football League (NFL). Amobi, within his short period of playing in the US as a student and professional footballer has set indelible records. SEYI GESINDE reports.

ANigerian, Amobi Okoye, who emerged the youngest player in the American National Football League (NFL), is still waxing stronger as a defensive player for the Chicago Bears.

Born June 10, 1987, the 24-year-old Anambra State indigene became the United States? Houston Texans? tenth overall in the 2007 NFL Draft. He had earlier played college football at Louisville.

At age 12, Amobi moved to Huntsville, Alabama in the US. His adaptation to the American environment was so fast that just after 14 days in God?s own country; he was tested and passed into the 9th grade.
He began playing football as a second year student at Lee High School, when he knew virtually nothing about the game.

But his high school coach who was quick to discover his talent advised him to start learning how to play in the NFL.

He heeded, and as of the time he became a senior student, he won first-team All-State honours as both a defensive lineman and offensive lineman.

When he turned 15 years of age, Amobi got an offer to study at the prestigious Harvard University, but he opted for University of Louisville as a result of his interest in developing a strong football programme.

While at Louisville, he started off as a biology student, but he eventually changed his course to psychology. Amobi had an interesting academic pursuit at Louisville that he graduated a semester earlier than his normal academic programme, meaning that instead of spending four years for his degree course, he completed his degree in three and a half years.

At 16, he became the youngest player in the United States National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Okoye played in all the 13 games at the competition not minding the fact that he entered as a freshman in the defensive. He had 17 tackles and a sack to his credit.

As a second year player, Amobi appeared in 11 of 12 games, recording 26 tackles and a sack. He only missed a game because of a shoulder injury.

In 2005 during his junior season, Amobi had a record of 23 tackles and four tackles for a loss. In the most popular game of that year played against the West Virginia Mountaineers, Amobi recorded only four tackles.

Entering the senior level in 2006, Amobi finally featured in all the 13 games played for the tournament and in all, he recorded 55 tackles, eight sacks, and recovered three fumbles.

He garnered Associated Press Second-Team All-American honours and first-team All-Big East honours. As the NCAA?s youngest senior at 19 years old, Okoye garnered first-round draft status during the season.
During the Senior Bowl, Amobi?s stock rose dramatically with strong practice and game performances.

He was drafted by the Houston Texans in the first round of the 2007 NFL draft. He became the youngest player to ever be drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft at only 19 years old, while also emerging the highest draft pick to come out of the University of Louisville since the AFL-NFL merger.
