Joe Pendenza of Wilmington played as UMass Lowell defeated Massachusetts, 6-3, Friday night in a Hockey East clash at the Mullins Center.
Senior F Riley Wetmore of Swanton, Vt., scored the 99th and 100th points of his career during the game. ?
With the win, UMass Lowell stopped a two-game slide to improve to 15-9-2 overall and 9-8-2 in Hockey East entering Saturday night?s series finale against the Minutemen at the Tsongas Center.
The loss was the third in four games for Massachusetts, which slipped to 10-14-2 and 7-11-2.
Wetmore achieved the milestone 15:04 into the third period when slapped home the rebound off a shot at the top of the slot by freshman F Ryan McGrath of O?Fallon, Mo., from the left side of the goal to give UMass Lowell a 5-3 lead.
Junior F Derek Arnold of Foxboro, scored a pair of goals and was named the game?s first star, both assisted by junior D Joe Houk of Richboro, Pa.
Freshman G Connor Hellebuyck of Commerce, Mich., making his first start since a Jan. 17 win over Providence (2-1), stopped 26 shots and earned his seventh straight win to improve to 7-1-0.
UMass Lowell earned the win despite being outshot 29-19, including 19-11 after two periods after which the River Hawks led 4-2.
Fresh off 12 days rest and Thursday?s announcement of its 16 teams joining it at the Division I level, UMass Lowell got out to a dream start after just 80 seconds when sophomore F Scott Wilson of Oakville, Ont., broke a six-game scoring drought.
Freshman F Michael Fallon of Glenview, Ill., handled down the right side and threaded a pass to Wilson streaking into the slot, who touched past sophomore G Kevin Boyle.
The River Hawks doubled their lead at 14:22 when Boyle seemingly thwarted a shot by junior F Joe Pendenza of Wilmington, only to have it trickle over the line.
The Minutemen pulled one back shorthanded at 16:54 with less than 10 seconds left when junior F Michael Pereira capitalized on a defensive error deep in UMass Lowell?s zone and slotted past Hellebuyck.
Celebrations were short-lived, however, as UMass Lowell scored its third at 19:03. Wetmore poked to Houk enabling for a 2 on 1 as Houk crossed to junior F Arnold on the right side, who one-timed past Boyle.
Junior F Connor Sheary scored on a power play goal from the right point off a pass from junior D Joel Hanley 9:38 into the second period to pull the Minutemen within a goal again, 3-2.
Arnold and Houk combined nicely again, however, when Houk hit Arnold out of a crowd at the left mid-ice, enabling for a one-on-one. Arnold backhanded past Boyle nicely for a 4-2 lead at 18:06.
Massachusetts would not go away. Shortly after Houk went to the box for interference, Hanley wristed past a screened Hellebuyck to once again bring the Minutemen within a goal at 7:10 of the third period, 4-3.
Following Wetmore?s heroics, junior Josh Holmstrom of Colorado Springs, Colo. added a sixth when he put back the rebound off a shot by Stephen Buco of North Providence, R.I., on a power play.
Boyle had 13 saves for Massachusetts.
