Pets should be able to enjoy the holiday season too

Released 14/12/2012

Dog and cat owners are reminded to plan ahead and make suitable arrangements for their pets to be cared for during the Christmas and New Year period.

"Over the holiday period the number of animals (especially dogs) found roaming the streets increases, and more pets end up at the Domestic Animal Services Shelter," said Peter Dinan, Manager of Operations and Registrar of Domestic Animal Services.

"By taking a few simple precautions you reduce the risk of your beloved pet getting lost, hit by a car, impounded at the Mugga Lane facility, involved in a dog attack, or harassing neighbours."

Mr Dinan said if you are going away you should ideally arrange for someone to care for your dog or cat early in the year as many kennels and catteries get booked out and the person you thought might normally look after your pet may also be going away.

"One of the essential checks you should do, if leaving your pet at your premises in the care of someone else, is make sure gates are kept locked and fences are maintained so they are escape proof. If you have a dog capable of jumping fences you should erect a dog run or enclosure to keep it contained.

"If your dog or cat does happen to get out, the process of returning your beloved pet is made a lot quicker and easier when their registration and microchip details are kept up-to-date and they are wearing their identification.

"Dogs in the ACT must be registered and both cats and dogs must also be micro-chipped. Domestic Animal Services provides a discounted micro-chipping service for $31.05. It is a simple and painless procedure that our staff can perform in less than five minutes.

"It is also important to have your pet desexed. Not only is it compulsory in the ACT for cats and dogs born after 21 June 2001 to be desexed (unless owners have a permit to keep a dog or cat sexually entire), but a dog's desire to roam is minimised when the animal is desexed.

"If regular exercise is kept up and your dog has toys to keep it occupied it is also less likely that it will try to escape. Regular check-ups from your pet's carer will also ensure that your dog or cat is never without water and has enough food. When your pet is left at home it also needs to have sufficient shade and shelter, especially with the temperatures rising.

"Your pet should be able to enjoy the holiday season just as much as you. These measures can ensure your dog has an enjoyable time while you are away and can also reduce the chance of your dog barking excessively and disturbing your neighbourhood."

Mr Dinan said Canberrans are encouraged to report roaming dogs by calling 13 22 81.
