Israel set to cripple Hamas military capability: Voice of Russia

It is about the military capability that the Hamas has reached. Hamas today has reached 40 kilometer range of missiles. And there are various comments on the operation, like many people say things like the Israeli political establishment has decided to launch this operation because of upcoming elections. But what I think is ? Israel will never, it is a rule 1 from the military perspective, Israel will never allow Hamas to reach a certain level of military capability. So, it is the first operation after the known operation Cast Lead.

Since 2009 Hamas has been developing it military capability. And this is the first thing ? the Israelis try to prevent Hamas?s military capability and destroy all their military facilities in the southern fronts. The second thing is ? Ahmed Jabar, the head of the military wing of Hamas who was assassinated, he had very close relations with the Egyptian intelligence and also the Israeli intelligence. The messages that he has been receiving from Israel to curb all the groups operating in Gaza and stop them, stop firing rockets from Gaza to Israel, it was a message. And this leader, he was a very charismatic, strong and very smart person and he has been using his power to try and curb all these groups.

But during the last months some of the groups, especially from different segments of groups like Islamic Jihad and other militant groups, started to send some rockets to Israel and Israel has been warning Hamas through Egypt that there will be some consequences. And so it was like rockets were raining down and these are the consequences after a long time of Israeli warnings. The third thing is ? of course it is related to elections but not like the first of the second thing. The part of this relationship with the elections is ? Israeli people especially in the south, in Beer Sheva, they are afraid of Hamas with rockets ? so, there is no normal life there. So, the Israeli people are scared and they want some kind of reaction from their Government and the Government has to give them something, especially taking into consideration the upcoming elections.

So, I think these are very crucial points. And the fourth point maybe I can add is like Hamas was erased from Syria and now they are based in Qatar. So, there is a shifting Hamas strategy from Syrian-Iranian they exited to Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt. I don?t know, I?m just speculating about it. But this operation could also be related to sending the message to some high level Hamas officials who has close relations with Iran.

I personally believe that in the upcoming days some high level or middle level Hamas officials will be discarded from Hamas because there is a serious shift and no one in the region, especially the US and also Turkey, no one in the region want to see Hamas in the Iranian orbit. So, they are based in Qatar now and the channels are open. It is much better for, especially Turkey for instance, and also Qatar and Saudi Arabia that they prefer to see Hamas on their side, not Iran?s side. So, this is my analysis.

Do you think that perhaps this is something like Mr. Netanyahu delivering on another one of his warnings? Remember, he used to warn that after the US election Israel is going to start action against Iran. Could that be an opening part of an anti-Iranian campaign by Israel?

That is possible because this operation also aims at sending a signal to Iran. And answering to your previous question I said ? if there will be an operation in the future in Iran or in any other country in the region from Israel or let?s say Hezbollah, so Israel would like to eliminate the danger of its southern borders. So, that?s why they are attacking military facilities of Hamas. They want to destroy all the capabilities first. So, it could be a preparatory response for the upcoming steps. So, it is possible but of course we cannot be sure of it.
